Berends was arrested and expelled from the country by the Nigerian government.

In 2008 while making his documentary Delta Boys, filmmaker Andrew Berends (The Blood of My Brother, When Adnan Comes Home) was arrested and falsely accused of espionage at the bustling Nembe waterside in Port Harcourt, Nigeria, while filming women bringing their products to the market. Also arrested were his translator, Samuel George, and host Joe Bussio. Berends was detained for 10 days and expelled from the country by the Nigerian government in a bid to suppress media coverage of the Niger Delta conflict. In the end, Berends was never charged with a crime, but George?s and Bussio?s legal statuses then remained undetermined. A fundraiser had been set up for people to contribute to their legal fees. Bussio had eventually been cleared of all charges, and George was expected to report to the authorities soon after, and he too was eventually let go, according to Berends.

Berends in a statement said, ?It is important that translators and local journalists around the world know they can do their jobs without fear for their lives, their families, or the expenses they will incur on our behalf.? Berends?s experience in Nigeria is just one example of a government using its power to deter journalists from reporting their stories, but this is not just happening overseas.

This brings to mind a more recent development back in April right here on U.S. soil when filmmaker Laura Poitras (The Oath) returned home from a recent trip abroad where she was detained by Homeland Security at Newark Airport and threatened with being handcuffed for attempting to take notes during her interrogation. Poitras has been repeatedly harassed, detained, interrogated and has had her cameras and computers seized as she attempts to re-enter her home country in more than three dozen incidences.

Cinema Eye Honors, the organization that honors the craft of nonfiction filmmaking (which in full disclosure, I am on the advisory board), released a statement offering a similar sentiment to that of Berends?s saying, ?It is unacceptable for any American nonfiction filmmaker or journalist to be treated in this manner. ?They must be able to return to their own country without fear of arrest or fear that their work product will be seized, solely because they are investigating or chronicling subject matter that may be sensitive or controversial.?

Delta Boys made its World Premiere last night as the closing film of Stranger Than Fiction?s spring season at IFC Center in New York. Berends bravely captures life in a tiny fishing village caught in the crossfire of the conflict of the Niger Delta militancy in the face of corrupt government oppression in this oil-rich region of Nigeria. In his own narration, Berends follows the personal stories of Ateke Tom, the ?Godfather? of the Niger Delta Vigilante Force, Chima, a 21-year-old who left home to join the fight, and Mama, a 22-year-old who struggles to give birth to her first child with no access to modern medical care, while raids are launched from a militant camp across the river. These stories reflect a broader global struggle between entrenched power and corporate interests and an underserved population. Nigeria is the fifth largest supplier of oil to the United States. Yet, despite this natural wealth, the majority of Niger Deltans live in poverty. Ateke?s militants, along with other groups, have called for a greater distribution of wealth and jobs. When their requests have been ignored, they?ve attacked oil installations and pipelines, kidnapped foreigners and made the entire Delta a no-go-zone. But many feel that while the Niger Delta struggle is legitimate, the militants? motives are not so pure.

Today's Honoree is Self Publishing Expert Ivin Viljoen | Today's ...

My claim to fame is that I have? written my first book in 3 days and published that book in two weeks? paving the way for me to become a self publishing expert. If you Google
my name, you will find many entries and articles I either wrote or? hosted. They are some of the many resources I have either written of or? preached about in my ministry career. I have also built and moderated? two websites that formed part of my youth work. Hey, you?ll even find? one or two negative articles about me on Google, but I?m sure all of us
who has spent over a year in their niche have had some kind of? persecution.

I have ever been trying to start a Church and after my seventh year? realized that perhaps that was not what I was supposed to do. Even? though ministry has always made me excited, and preaching even more, my struggles have made me realize that I am in the wrong business. I have a? dream, as Dr. Martin Luther King once said, and that is to write.

I am of the opinion that to have published ones work is the pinnacle in? writers? success. And that I have set out to do. I have been blogging? since 2006 and forged a successful blog by the end of 2007 writing a? column from a Christian perspective. I have written thousands of? articles, many of them published on the internet, wrote a Bible College
curriculum, wrote scripts for a Cartoon series and wrote a couple books
of which one is already published.

My dream since I was little was to become a writer. Always trying to? preach the way I write, I realized even though I have pretty much honed? the craft of public speaking, I had many mountains to conquer in this? business. I figured since I have a passion for it, and it formed such a? big part of my ministry, I might as well pursue doing it for a living
writing with a purpose.

Going through around a month of planning, I eventually started my self? publishing blog, Authopublisher. I hope to provide immaculate value here? as I put my passion into what I do.?

Open source mini sub appeals to our inner Steve Zissou

Quadrocopters haven't exactly opened the skies for DIY exploration so much as they have for acrobatic feats, but the OpenROV project is hoping to make the briny depths friendlier for aspiring explorers and educators alike. The open source rover, spearheaded by NASA engineer and researcher Eric Stackpole, sinks to depths of up to 300 feet (100 meters), runs on eight C-cell batteries for approximately 1.5 hours and can clip by at three feet (one meter) per second. Within the laser-cut acrylic frame, a sealed cylinder houses a BeagleBone, HD webcam and LED lights. This all weighs in at 5.5 pounds and is piloted using a web browser and video feed. The footage is then piped up to a laptop that tethers the vehicle to the shore. Pre-orders for OpenROV 2.3 kits will be taken through Kickstarter later this summer at $750 apiece, though there are plans to sell fully assembled units. For now, explorers can register their interest at the link below and impatient Jacques Cousteaus will be pleased to know that all files necessary to build version 2.2 are available to download now.

BEN CRAVEN Great and Terrible Potions music review by Epignosis

4 stars One of my favorite albums from 2011 was Ben Craven's Great and Terrible Potions, which is a symphonic journey full of exciting twists and memorable melodies. I highly recommend this to fans of Kansas and other such bands that have orchestral finesse but also a penchant for occasional straightforward rock excursions- a real gem.

"Diabolique" The door to the secret chambers creaks open and the sound of an ominous music box leads into a piano introduction. Loaded with organ, punchy bass, and other elements, this symphonic rock overture introduces the listener to one of several melodic themes.

"Nobody Dies Forever Part 1" The first song, with slide guitar and trembling bass leading the way, has a cabaret feel. Craven's voice is clean and low in the verses, but soft and airy in the refrain. A screaming guitar solo finishes things off.

"Aquamarine" Atmospheric keyboards and distant vocals create a tranquil, almost out-of-body experience, as though one is about to kiss death and can see the proverbial light at the end of the tunnel. A bluesy guitar breaks the spell. The dreamy rock music that follows somewhat references Pink Floyd.

"Ready to Lose" This is a catchy acoustic rock song that reminds me of Spock's Beard on their more acoustic moments. It does become more energized after the first verse, bringing in electric guitars, bass, drums, and a vocoder.

"The Conjurer" Exquisite piano introduces the bittersweet twang of the guitar, and overall, this moves and feels like an opus from the Electric Light Orchestra- it just needs Jeff Lynne's voice and falsetto harmonies to complete it. The guitar solo, however, sets it apart.

"No Specific Harm" The first of two extended songs (and one of the best on the album) has a moody backdrop with grim guitar. As the drums enter, the music seems cinematic, like the perfect soundtrack for an army in a fantasy film marching to battle. The music is painted darkly, with hushed vocals and a very memorable, sinister refrain.

"Solace" As the title implies, this interlude on classical guitar is quite peaceful, warm, and inviting, eventually adding piano and other light keyboards, and finally a heartfelt lead guitar.

"Nobody Dies Forever Part 2" Craven briefly revisits the second track.

"Great & Terrible Potions" The second extended piece, the title track, begins with a natural-sounding voice and piano. The instrumental interlude has a variety of bellicose keyboards. The song also features the skillful lead guitar work the rest of the album has shown previously. The music box plays once more, and the door to this nightmarish, alchemic world is shut.

Fast Company ? Creative Strategy Lessons from the 100 Most ...

The June 2012 issue of Fast Company highlights the magazine?s list of The 100 Most Creative People in Business 2012. I will admit to not reading all of previous Fast Company 100 Most Creative People in Business lists. This year, however, having Ceelo Green on the cover (along with Purrfect) compelled me to take a shot at reviewing the entire list in-depth for the first time.

And of course, taking the time to read the whole list necessitated coming up with a way to turn the effort into a Brainzooming blog post. My starting idea was to pick one creative inspiration from each of the 100 people and turn the creative lessons into a massive 100-item list post.

After going through and identifying the 100 creative lessons that stood out for me, however, I realized the post was about 3000 words! That is typically a week?s worth of blog posts!

To not overtax you, the list of creative lessons I captured from the Fast Company Most Creative list is going to be spread out over several days in this shortened week. Each lesson references the person whose profile inspired it, along with the number they had on the list.

Today?s list includes thirty-one creative strategy lessons from this year?s list. Other days will include lessons from the list on creative perspectives, storytelling, and disruptive thinking. The hope is the lessons get you thinking even more creatively and provide ideas for enhancing your own creative efforts.

George Will Calls Donald Trump 'Bloviating Ignoramus'

ABC News? George Will criticized Donald Trump's role in Mitt Romney's campaign, calling the real estate mogul a ?bloviating ignoramus? on Sunday's "This Week."

Trump endorsed Romney in the Republican presidential race in February. He is scheduled to appear with Romney at a May 29 fundraiser in Las Vegas, even as the Romney campaign refutes his claims that President Obama was not born in the U.S. Trump recently raised his birther views again in a new interview.

On Sunday, "This Week" moderator Jake Tapper wondered if Trump hurt Romney's efforts to convince voters to "take him seriously."

?I do not understand the cost benefit here," Will lamented. "The costs are clear. The benefit ? what voter is gonna vote for [Romney] because he is seen with Donald Trump. The cost of appearing with this bloviating ignoramus is obvious it seems to me." His fellow panel members laughed at the remark.

Will continued, ?Donald Trump is redundant evidence that if your net worth is high enough, your IQ can be very low and you can still intrude into American politics. Again, I don?t understand the benefit. What is Romney seeking??

His crack came months after Trump's own shots at the pundit. In March, the real estate mogul called Will "a totally overrated fool" with "the little glasses and the hair slicked to the side" after the latter suggested that the GOP should give up on the bid for the White House and focus on controlling Congress instead.

Marketing | Talk about Business, Finance and Hobbies

Many of the products or services that are not, or less sold on the market due to its marketing. It could be because marketing is not widespread, or even none at all marketing efforts, no promotions, no advertising, no pamphlets or brochures. When starting a new business, it takes extra effort and cost of marketing for the promotion.
It could also be a product or service is sold on the market because prices are not competitive or can not be reached by the target consumer. How, do a little research to determine consumer buying power to set the price of the product or service. This can be done by giving questionnaires or direct interviews with a sample of the target consumer. If the product or service you offer has a rival, and turned with the same quality they were cheaper price, change the price you have to offer and determine the price that can compete.
So, the summary is if you want a product or service sold on the market, taking into account the five factors above. If a business can meet the five factors is well, the success of a product or service to sell on the market must be achieved.

Anti-Syrian regime mourners chant slogans as they carry the body of soldier Khaled Shurbajy, who was shot by Syrian security forces in Dir el Zour last week after disobeying orders to fire on anti-Assad protesters, during his funeral procession, in the Kfar Suseh area of Damascus, Syria, on Saturday , May 26, 2012. (AP) ? Activists say that a bomb has struck a security vehicle in the Syrian capital of Damascus, causing casualties.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees say Sunday's blast occurred in the upscale neighborhood of Mazzeh.

The LCC said the blast occurred near a military airport in the neighborhood. The Observatory said the explosion caused casualties but did not give a breakdown.

A video posted online by activists showed thick black smoke billowing from what it said was Mazzeh.

Damascus is tightly controlled by regime forces but has been hit by a wave of blasts over recent months that claimed the lives of scores of people. Most of the blasts have targeted Syrian security agencies.

Homosexuality impacting on the Church

THE EDITOR, Sir:

The Christian Church is between a rock and a hard place. On one hand, this institution ought not to condemn practising lesbians and gays. On the other, the Church, based on biblical principles, cannot condone the practice of homosexuality.

In the article titled 'Stop engaging in gay-rights lobbying' published in The Gleaner on May 17, 2012, the essayist lauded the view: "If we don't want God's influence in the affairs of our land, we should change our national anthem, remove the Bibles from the courtrooms, have no devotions in schools and find some other symbol by which to swear."

A sacrifice of this magnitude amounts to a total erosion of the bedrock on which our society has survived.

Absolute position

This axiom places us in an absolute position. God cannot be mocked. Either we live by His principles or dismiss them, and live with the consequences. It is urgent that the Church demand global attention in addressing this burgeoning phenomenon.

Unfortunately, the paradigm has shifted. The lifestyle of homosexuals has become a common phenomenon in Jamaica, with the country being deemed homophobic.

Do we, as a people, have a right to what is socially, culturally, and morally correct? Who defines our reality? When did we get here? It is time to defend the greater good of our society.

The Church has the largest platform on which to petition the affairs of the nation. What is urgently needed is the dismissal of denominational barriers, and for the Church to unite and intervene in social affairs. Same-sex marriage is not part of our religious or cultural orientation, and we must fight for a cause.

Ind. man takes hostages, shoots self in office

VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) ? Accountant Carolyn Biesen was working in her Indiana real estate office when she heard a commotion near the front desk. She walked out, saw a man standing over her injured co-worker on the ground, then yelled at him to leave.

"That's when he pulled his gun out ? and pointed it in the air," she told The Associated Press late Friday, several hours after she and several other people were taken hostage by the gunman.

Biesen, 51, retreated back into her office, locked herself in, shoved a file cabinet in front of the door and called 911. Curled up under her desk, she heard two gun shots, then several more in rapid succession.

The man, police said later, was looking for someone he believed owed him money when he went into the Prudential Executive Group Real Estate office in Valparaiso on Friday morning. Valparaiso Police Chief Michael Brickner said officers believe the gunman shot himself twice in the head before SWAT members rushed in almost seven hours later, after the last two hostages were released unharmed.

An ambulance rushed the man to a hospital, but he died Friday evening, police said.

"He has some history here, but we believe he's from out of state," said Brickner, who declined to release the man's name.

Police received a 911 call around 10 a.m. reporting a man with a gun had entered the brokerage office. Sgt. Michael Grennes said there was a "brief exchange of gunfire" when officers arrived.

There were fewer than 10 people in the building when the incident began, and the last two hostages were released unharmed after 3 p.m., Grennes said.

No hostages reported being shot, though Grennes said one person who was struck in the head was treated and released from a hospital.

Another witness, Randy Baker, said he was in an adjacent parking lot shoveling asphalt when an officer wielding a pistol suddenly ran by and asked if he'd seen or heard anything about a gun. When Baker said he hadn't, the officer approached the Prudential building.

Seconds later, the officer began firing at least half a dozen times in rapid succession, he said.

"It was like boom, boom, boom, boom," Baker said.

After jumping behind his B&G Seal Coating truck when the firing began, Baker peeked slowly around and saw a woman through a Prudential window ? cowering under an office desk.

"That's what really scared me," Baker said. "And I ran out of there fast."

SWAT team members broke windows in the building and stormed inside less than two hours after the last hostages were released.

Mack Elliott, an agent at the brokerage, wasn't in the office at the time but said he spoke with agents who were there and believed the incident stemmed from a dispute over a real estate transaction.

Biesen, the accountant, said she didn't believe the gunman intended to hurt her.

"If he wanted to, he could have come right into the office ? maybe shooting through the door," she said. "It was scary. But I was thinking about my loved ones," she said.

Smiling and visibly relieved, Biesen spoke Friday night from her home, where several dozen family and friends gathered after word broke she had made it out unharmed.

Despite the trauma, she said she felt sorry for the gunman, noting he could have decided to surrender the office after all the hostages were released.

"It's very sad," she said.

The Power of Email Lists for Web Designers and How to Get One ...

Imagine if you had a sea of potential clients who were one click away from working with you. How would it impact your web design business? The secret is building email lists that you can turn to to build relationships and generate leads.

There are many ways to grow and expand your freelance business and one of the most powerful is an email list. For little to no money, you can start a list, build your traffic, and gather more potential leads who will be pining to work with you.

If you are really serious about jumpstarting your web design business, consider email marketing as one of the strategies that will help you get to the top.

preview large getresponse design tips design blogging design

WHAT are email lists?

An electronic mailing list allows online webmasters and marketers to send electronic posts, announcements and messages to a list of subscribers at one time. Mailing list software saves subscribers? email addresses and publishes messages automatically as determined by the webmaster?s schedule.

Twenty years ago, businesses had to stamp, address and physically send mailings to all of their customers. This not only cost money, but also required a lot of manpower.

Fast forward to today and email marketing not only costs pennies to implement, but it is also the one trend that has stood the test of time. While SEO, social media and even PPC have gone through major transformations, email marketing remains one of the most effective strategies to gaining leads and building an online reputation.

WHEN do I start an email list?

Most designers think they need to wait until they have a blog or more of an online presence before starting an email list. But, this simply is not true.

In fact, if you can manage to acquire some email addresses before you start your blog, you will have a number of readers ready to share. This will give you a head start along with instant traffic!

WHY do I need an email list?

Why would web designers need to build mailing lists? There are many reasons why, but we will cover the two most important here:

1. What happens to those potential leads/clients who visit your website but may not be ready to pull the trigger to contact you for services? The worst thing that can happen is they leave your website.

A potential client may be more inclined to give an email address than commit to starting a design job.

An email opt-in box will help you capture those leads and give you the ability to nurture them a little more to urge them to work with you. Your messages will be targeted towards giving helpful advice and also to remind them of your services.

2. Future Work ? Potential clients may not need services the moment they subscribe to your list. But when they do, they will know where to come because they will remember who you are from your email messages.

An email list allows designers to build relationships with subscribers and offer advice which makes potential leads to want to work with them.

By building relationships you are creating a reputation for your business which leads to more customers and more revenue!

Are you ready to start a list?

First things first?

You will need an autoresponder. An autoresponder is the software that sends your messages to your subscribers.

Here are a few popular services:

Now that you are hopefully convinced about starting an email list, here are some first steps to get the ball rolling:

  • Invite your current contacts ? Chances are you already have a list of past clients and their email addresses. Do not automatically add these addresses to your email list. Politely send an email with a link to the page where they can subscribe. Tell them you are starting a newsletter and state the benefits they will receive.
  • Subscribers ? If you already have a blog, invite your current subscribers via a blog post to subscribe to your list.

How to Get People to Subscribe

To get people to opt in to your list, you must give them an incentive.

Some marketers simply offer updates and this strategy does work for popular websites. But, if you really want to boost your email marketing campaign, I recommend you give away a free gift.

Many marketers offer a free ebook, report, video or course. The gift can be anything as long as it offers value to the subscriber.

Here are some best practices to remember:

  • Make it Valuable! You can wrap a green rock in an emerald cover to make it look like a rare gem, but once people receive it, they will know it is a fake. Don?t view your freebie as simply something to give away to get more subscribers. If you do, that?s all it will be and though you will acquire a few subscribers, you will do nothing for your reputation and potentially harm it.
  • Who? Your freebie must solve a need for your subscribers. The first step to knowing what to offer is KNOWING your audience.

Who are your customers?
What are their needs?
What are their problems?

As web designers, your audience is not other web designers?unless you are a web design instructor or teacher. Therefore, giving away a report on web design that includes complex programming and tutorials will not be successful.

If your audience is composed of small business owners who run websites but need assistance with marketing, consider a report about optimizing websites for conversions, split testing, usability testing, or the latest internet trends.

The trick to nailing your conversions is to become intimately acquainted with the people you service!

Find out what their specific pain points are and you will find a stream of success.

  • Make it substantial! This is not the time for a two-paragraph report on what Aunt Matilda said about web design. If you are giving away a free report, it should be at least eight pages in length and look professional. Use a company logo and professional graphics throughout.
  • Edits are Crucial! Many of our readers hail from all over the world and we welcome a diverse group of people. Some, however, are not fluent in English, or they know English, but not well enough to write with perfect grammar. If you fall into these categories, I suggest you hire an English editor to proofread your report or ebook so it has maximum impact.

Hubspot published this short newsletter to further discuss Top Incentives for Driving Email Subscribers.

The Opt-in Box/ Sign Up form

The Opt-in box is the site of the email address query where subscribers add their email addresses. The design and look of this box is very important and will influence conversions.

Design

The design of the subscription box should look like an extension of your website, but stand out from the page just enough to be noticed.

Here are some important design elements to remember:

1. Attention-grabbing headline

The headline must catch your web visitors? eyes immediately. It should be in a different typeface than the rest of the copy and solve a problem for your visitors. After reading your headline, your web visitors should feel that you know their problems and your newsletter/mailings will help them.

Seamless Success design tips design blogging design

2. Graphics

The graphic is not necessary in all cases, but it is a good practice when you are giving away a report or ebook. The graphic should look like the 3D physical form of the item you are offering in return for a subscriber?s email address.

DPK-Graphic-Design-Power-Email-Lists-Web-Designers

3. Benefits

Mention a few benefits or even one so visitors will know what to expect. Inform them of what they will receive and why they will want it. If you are not offering a freebie, use the copy space to tell potential subscribers the benefits of joining your newsletter and what they can expect.

Remember that an email address is someone?s private possession. You have to earn the right to receive it.

4. FREE

IF you are offering a freebie, add the word ?Free? to make a bigger impact. Also, don?t forget to tell your visitors to enter their email to receive free access to their gift.

1st-Web-Designer-Newsletter-Power-Email-Lists-Web-Designers

Tip: It?s a good practice to inform your subscribers that you will never share their email and you hate spam just as much as they do.

Kendall-Summerhawk-Optin-Power-Email-Lists-Web-Designers

5. Call to Action

Your call to action should be interesting and attention-grabbing. Consider text like ?Get Instant Access? or ?Sign Me Up?.

Location

The location of the subscription form will also influence your conversions. It is recommended to test the placement to determine the optimal position.

Here are the most popular locations:

Below Blog Post

Optin-Below-Blog-Post-Power-Email-Lists-Web-Designers

Notice how John Chow speaks DIRECTLY to the person by stating, ?Did you enjoy this blog post?? This gets the reader?s attention more than a generic form.

Blog Sidebar

This is the most popular place to put an opt in because it is visible without being obtrusive to readers.

About Page

Don?t ignore the chance for conversions on your About page. As long as you are not overusing your opt-in box, the About page is a great place to capture email addresses.

Pat Flynn of SmartPassiveIncome.com performed a test and saw a marked increase in subscriber opt-ins when he added a form to his About page. He explains his results here.

Footer

Many marketers use a footer opt-in as a secondary source. However, some web designers use the footer opt-in exclusively. You will need to test to see which scenario works best. It may be a good place to start.

Pop Up

Popups actually perform very well even though they can be annoying. My advice is to use them at your own risk. Some very prominent marketers swear by them and others stay far away.

Dan Zarrella, social media scientist, has been using the popup for years now. It annoys me because every time I click on a new page it continues to disrupt my reading, but he offers incredible value with his information. If you want to try the popup, make sure to test different positions to see which location performs the best.

The Messages

The main goal of your email campaigns is to develop relationships, nurture leads and offer value WITHOUT selling repeatedly and spamming your subscribers? inboxes.

What should the email messages consist of?

Here are some ideas:

  • Recent blog posts
  • Helpful industry tips
  • Recent projects
  • Links to helpful resources
  • Company news
  • Contests and promotions
  • Special offers
  • Incentivized surveys
  • Personal stories (occasionally)

When composing your messages, here are some important tips to keep in mind:

  • Don?t send the same old content everyone reads. Even if it is similar, find a way to make it creative and interesting.
  • Keep it short! Use bullets and one to two sentence paragraphs.
  • Make your subscribers feel exclusive. Use their name, and address them directly as if you are talking only to them. Similar to how people feel when they pay thousands of dollars to be part of a club membership, your subscribers will feel special if you make an extra effort.
  • Don?t know where to start? Curate! If you are not a writer and you do not have the budget to hire anyone, consider researching the web for the top information and send the links to your readers.
  • Give people the option to unsubscribe.
  • Don?t take unsubscribes personally. Sometimes I unsubscribe from a list simply because I am trying to streamline my emails. It happens to everyone. However, when you notice a bundle of them at one time or a continuous flow, it may be time to adjust your campaign.
  • Be careful not to use words that trigger SPAM filters or your email will end up in your subscribers? junk mail. Here is an extensive list of email SPAM trigger words.
