In addition to anchoring CBS Morning News, Nguyen reports regularly for CBS This Morning and contributes to the network?s other broadcasts and platforms.

Prior to joining CBS, she had served as anchor of the weekend morning edition of CNN Newsroom since 2004. During that time, she anchored the network?s coverage of major news events, including the earthquakes in Chile and Haiti in 2010, Pope Benedict XVI?s historic visit to the United States in 2008, the Virginia Tech shooting in 2007, the death of Pope John Paul II in April 2005 and the London bombing attacks in July 2005. She also anchored portions of CNN?s coverage of the tsunami disaster in South Asia, the Iraqi elections in January 2005 and the June 2004 handover of sovereignty to Iraq.

Nguyen traveled to Constitucion, Mexico, in 2009 to cover the damage caused by Hurricane Jimena. In 2008, she reported from Houston and Galveston, Texas, during Hurricane Ike. Also that year, she went undercover in Myanmar for a series of exclusive reports that exposed a lack of aid two months after Cyclone Nargis killed more than 140,000 people. Nguyen traveled to Africa in 2007 to cover the presidential elections in Sierra Leone, the political and economic crises in Zimbabwe and apartheid-era prosecutions in South Africa.

In September 2005, Nguyen reported and anchored from the Houston Astrodome, where thousands sought shelter after Hurricane Katrina. Later that month, she went on assignment in her birth country of Vietnam to cover the deadly flooding caused by annual monsoons.

Before joining CNN, Nguyen was an anchor at KTVT-TV, the CBS affiliate in Dallas, where she covered numerous breaking news events, including the Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Nguyen began her career as a morning anchor and reporter at KWTX-TV, the CBS affiliate in Waco, Texas.

In 2007, the Smithsonian Institute recognized her as the first Vietnamese-American to anchor a national television news broadcast in the United States. In 2003, she won a regional Emmy Award for Outstanding Noon Newscast. In 1998, she received an Associated Press Award for breaking news coverage.

Nguyen is the co-founder of Help the Hungry, a non-profit organization that provides humanitarian aid to poverty-stricken families.

Guest post: Take your blog to the speaking circuit | Styling You

When I started my blog, Tune into Radio Carly,?in December 2009, I never imagined where it would take me.

I created it to develop and distribute my writing and to connect with new people. Three years on, my blog has helped create a very successful side career (I already have a day job in the government) as a writer, speaker and community TV presenter.

My blog could be classed as a lifestyle blog with a difference. I write about food, fashion, live music, (failed) romance and blogging. I also write a lot about what it?s like to live with a chronic illness and visible facial difference ? a severe skin condition called Ichthyosis form erythroderma (meaning scaly red skin).

I write about the medical and social challenges of this condition. I also write a little about body image diversity, highlighting the need for people with visible facial differences to be represented more widely in the media. In doing so, I receive emails and comments from many people with similar skin conditions and various chronic illnesses, as well as from people without illnesses, telling me I?ve helped them in some way. I?ve given them information, hope or courage to tell their own story.

Shortly after starting my blog, I submitted some blog posts to a state government-run disability website called DiVine. The editor asked me to write for them, and I?ve since written for Mamamia, ABC?s Ramp Up, The Hoopla and News Limited, plus a number of guest posts on blogs, as well as shared my story with journalists in the mainstream media.

In addition to the writing, I?ve shared my story through speaking.

Carly Findlay, right, with Layne Beachley at the Aim for the Stars ball in 2012

I started speaking about five years ago at a workplace event for International Day of People with Disability. Speaking in front of colleagues was good for developing my confidence. Mid way through 2010 I auditioned for a role on a disability TV show called No Limits, and I was cast as a presenter. We discuss disability issues on a panel and interview a wide range of people. This has been great because I have learnt a lot about disability issues, culture, history and language, and met some amazing friends.

I really enjoy sharing my story face to face with an audience, and I also believe that because of my appearance, a speech often has greater impact than the written word. Because of my blog, I have an archive of stories to share, and I can draw on these and modify them for various audiences. I speak about living with Ichthyosis ? hoping to make people laugh and think, and change their perceptions of people with visibly different appearances. I also speak about blogging and social media.

I have spoken to many audiences including young people at the Royal Children?s Hospital, potential sponsors at a community television event, doctors and genetic counsellors, bloggers, and at the Australian Public Service Commission?s ethics and social media conference

It?s funny how speaking at one event, or being involved in a particular community, can help you get to another.

My contacts in the disability and blogging networks have been fantastic in putting me forward for speaking opportunities ? including radio appearances. The lovely Nicole Avery from Planning with Kids asked me to speak at the AusBlogCon in 2011. My good friend and ABC Ramp Up editor Stella Young put me forward for an ABC interview. Members of No Limits asked me to feature in a 15 minute community radio documentary. Just recently, I was filmed for a federal government social media initiative for International Day of People with Disability.

The best speaking opportunities have come from blogging! You can take your blog to the speaking circuit.

I gave a speech at my work about blogging as an effective way of story telling. Someone in the audience was a Girl Guides leader and she asked me to speak at the next Guides meeting. I did, and at that meeting, I met a woman who worked at a disability organisation. She then asked me to speak at her organisation?s youth training event. When I arrived at the event, there were 600 school children that I had to speak in front of.

And in August 2011 I received a tweet from the Centre for Appearance Research (CAR), based at the University of the West of England, in Bristol, UK. They had read a blog post of mine, and shared it with their readers. I checked out their website, was interested in what they do, and contacted them to see how I could work with them. They asked me to review a computer based psychology program about appearance for young people.

Earlier this year some of the CAR team came to Melbourne for a conference and they met me. They asked me to speak at their Appearance Matters conference in Bristol in July 2012. Of course I said yes!! It was such a good experience ? I spoke to around 50 academics and doctors, and received great feedback. My speech is here.

My hospital?s dermatology department has been great in helping me get to speak in England, and they too have given me speaking opportunities. I now alternate between patient and speaker, educating dermatologists and geneticists about both the medical and social elements of this condition.

Diversifying from your blog means that you can develop and share your skills in other areas, which in turn could earn you some money. While I don?t work with many PR companies, I feel the writing and speaking opportunities given to me by community groups, hospitals and universities are far more beneficial to my career ambitions.

If you are thinking about taking your blog from the written to spoken word, here are some of my tips:

From little things big things grow

Continue blogging. Your blog is a great resource for content for your speeches, and also for sharing your completed speeches (transcripts and video) with your readers who couldn?t be at your speaking event.

Attend events where you?ll meet bloggers and other people in your interest areas. Share your work on social media ? you never know who might discover it. Offer to do speaking in your workplace or local community ? your church or a school are good places to start.

Practise your speaking

Attend Toastmasters groups or book into a short course. Practice in front of your family or friends, or even in meetings at work.

I?ve not done Toastmasters, but I did a lot of presentations during my university degrees, and I?m fortunate that through doing community TV, I can watch myself back and find areas where I can improve.

Speak about what you know

As a blogger, you are often an expert in a certain field ? parenting, cooking, fashion. As a speaker, I think it?s best to speak about what you know too. It makes for an authentic speech. I feel most confident speaking about myself ? my skin condition and blogging. When I write a blog post, I write it how I speak or think. This means my blog posts can often easily be translated into a speech.

Know your audience

You may be speaking about the same topic at all of the events you?re invited to, but your audience demographic will not always be the same. Your content may need to be tailored to suit your audiences. For example, I have used simpler language for children, provided technical explanations for non social media users and covered more strategic content for academics and doctors (I included parts of my Masters thesis for these speeches).

Be yourself

You don?t need to be like an evangelical speaker to have an impact. I recommend you speak clearly, maintain eye contact with your audience, and try to make them think and make them laugh.

In my writing and speaking I am always honest and authentic. I hope not to come across as seeking pity. I am always myself, always realistic, but never sympathy seeking. If I can make someone laugh at a really unfortunate situation that I?ve been faced with, I know I?ve done my job right.

Do you speak because of your blog? What tips do you have for bloggers asked to speak to an audience?

Carly Findlay lives in Melbourne. She?s a blogger and writer, community TV?presenter and lover of cooking, live music, fashion and Darren Hayes.?Carly blogs?here??and tweets at?@carlyfindlay?|?Photo credits:?Bio photo Camille Condon and Layne Beachley photo by Carol Gibbons Photography.

Editor?s note: I too have been asked to speak many times since starting my blog and my business. The courses that really helped me step up to those keynotes and presentations ? and deal with confidence in getting in front of an audience ? were the courses run by Carren Smith. Carren ? a Bali bombing survivor ? has turned her story of survival into one that can help others tell their story. I?m very proud to call her my friend.

Share your blogging know-how

Thanks so much to everyone who plays along with my Saturday blogging linky. Sharing your blogging knowledge with other bloggers and potential bloggers really is how this blogging world best goes round. It?s a bit like having a mini online conference here every week.

Remember if you want to join in, just add your link below. The link needs to be to a post ABOUT BLOGGING?(all others will be deleted). Please fill in the box where it says ?name? like this:?BLOG NAME: Blog post title. That way your blog gets a plug and if you include the title of your post, you?ll attract readers interested in the topic.

PST: Previewing Real Salt Lake-Sounders

Seattle and Real Salt Lake may be playoff fixtures, but each team enters this Major League Soccer postseason with something to prove. Notoriously, Seattle has failed to advance in their three playoff appearances, a record that?s overshadowed the remarkable feat of making the postseason every year of their MLS existence. For RSL, their 2009 title was not only an achievement but a promise. Now, the team is in search of a trophy that will quell the sting of their failed 2010-11 CONCACAF Champions League run.

For the second straight season, the teams meet in the Western Conference semifinals, and for the second straight season, a season that began with expectations and promise will end too soon.

Kickoff: 10:00 p.m. Eastern, Friday, CenturyLink Field, NBC Sports Network

Recap of last year?s first leg in Salt Lake?| And second in Seattle

On the Seattle Sounders:

  • Memories from last year die hard, which explains why last year?s semifinal has been increasingly pertinent around Seattle. Then, the Sounders opened their postseason with a 3-0 loss at Rio Tinto Stadium, dooming them to another early playoff exit (Real Salt Lake went on to eliminate Seattle, 3-2).
  • Seattle?s made four notable improvements from last year: Goalkeeper of the Year candidate Michael Gspurning is in goal; Swedish international Adam Johannson is at right back; former Bundesliga standout Christian Tiffert augments the midfield; and resurgent U.S. international Eddie Johnson spearheads the attack.
  • Johnson, however, is questionable for Friday?s game, having picked up a hamstring injury Sunday in Los Angeles. If he can?t go, Sammy Ochoa will.

MORE: Still awaiting word on Eddie Johnson

  • With Fredy Montero and Mauro Rosales, Seattle?s attack will be potent regardless of Johnson?s health. The defending, however, remains a question. Seattle has the league?s second-best defensive record but is weak defending set pieces, something that will get worse in the absence of Johnson.
  • So if Seattle?s defense is so weak, how are they so good at preventing goals? Much of the credit goes to Gspurning, but don?t under-estimate the contributions of Osvaldo Alonso and Brad Evans. Whether Evans or Tiffert partner Alonso on Friday, Seattle?s midfield duo to be tested by an RSL diamond that plays notoriously narrow. Whomever gets the call, be prepared for an overload.
  • The bigger concern for Seattle was their inability to win important games. The Sounders went 1-1-1 in their late season Cascadia Cup matches despite the quality of opposition (Vancouver, Portland). A home loss to San Jose knocked them out of the Supporters? Shield chase, while a defeat in Los Angeles on the season?s last day relegated them to third in the West.

On Real Salt Lake:

  • While Seattle?s made a number of upgrades, Real Salt Lake returns largely the same team that started the first leg of last year?s semifinal. Andy Williams (retirement) and Robbie Russell (D.C. United) have moved on, but with Ned Grabavoy and Tony Beltran, RSL?s no worse off.
  • With Seattle?s trouble on set pieces, Alvaro Saborio could be in for another big series. The Costa Rican international is coming off a 17-goal season and scored the first two against in last year?s semifinal.
  • The key to Real?s attack, however, is Javier Morales. At his best, the Argentine midfielder is the league?s best playmaker. He?ll be Alonso?s number one responsibility.
  • In defense, Real Salt Lake has the league?s best four-some (left-to-right: Chris Wingert, Nat Borchers, Jamison Olave, Beltran), but the central pair has been troubled by Seattle?s tendency to play long and directly at them. Although Fredy Montero isn?t the league?s fastest attacker, the timing of his runs creates problems for RSL?s all-star duo.
  • The last time RSL was in Seattle, they played the Sounders to a 0-0 despite playing an hour up a man. That?d take the same result on Friday, even if this month?s draw was another indication of Real Salt Lake?s troubles playing from the favorite?s perch.

Bottom line:

Seattle?s not only failed to advance in the playoffs, they?ve never scored in a first leg. It?s not a long history (three years), but it?s still symptomatic. Too often, Seattle is passive ? more reactive than imposing ? an attitude that concedes the initiative despite their superior talent. In the regular season, that approach manifests in disappointing results against Cascadia rivals or letting Ricardo Salazar become something that defines a game. In the playoffs, it leads you to be pacified in the first 90 minutes.

That?s why Seattle finishing third may be a blessing. At home, they?ll come out aggressive, confront their demons, and force RSL onto the?back foot. While Real often plays their best under such circumstances, Seattle?s a more talented team this year than last. They have the potential to redeem themselves.

(AP) ? Evoking harrowing memories of Hurricane Katrina, 300 patients were evacuated floor by floor from a premier hospital that lost generator power at the height of superstorm Sandy.

Rescuers and staff at New York University Langone Medical Center, some making 10 to 15 trips down darkened stairwells, began their mission Monday night, the youngest and sickest first, finishing about 15 hours later.

Among the first out were 20 babies in neonatal intensive care, some on battery-powered respirators.

"Everyone here is a hero," Dr. Bernard Birnbaum, a senior vice president at Tisch Hospital, the flagship at NYU, told exhausted crews as he released all but essential employees late Tuesday morning. "Thank you, thank you, thank you."

More than two dozen ambulances from around the city lined up around the lower Manhattan block to transport the sick to Mount Sinai Hospital, the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, St. Luke's Hospital, New York Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center and Long Island Jewish Hospital.

Margaret Chu, 36, of Manhattan, gave birth to a son, Cole, shortly before noon Monday. "Then, a couple of hours later, things got a little hairy. The electricity started to flicker and the windows got shaky," she said from LIJ's Lenox Hill, where she was transported after generators failed and NYU was plunged into darkness.

Chu, accompanied by husband Gregory Prata, was able to walk 13 flights into a waiting ambulance with help from staff and first responders lighting the way by flashlight. She said other women who had given birth during the storm and were evacuated were carried down on sleigh-like gurneys.

"Everybody was pretty calm. I would call it organized chaos," she said.

Meanwhile, other New York hospitals canceled outpatient appointments and elective surgeries. And several closed and evacuated patients, including New York Downtown Hospital, a Manhattan campus of the VA New York Harbor Healthcare System and other NYU-affiliated facilities. Bellevue and Coney Island Hospital were evacuating Tuesday afternoon.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg was clearly angry about the NYU Medical Center crisis when he addressed reporters late Monday, saying hospital officials had assured the city they had working backup power.

Last year, NYU evacuated in advance of Hurricane Irene on the order of city officials, spokeswoman Allison Clair said. "This year we were not told to evacuate by the city."

Without power, there are no elevators so patients ? some of whom were being treated for cancer and other serious illnesses ? were carefully carried down staircases. As the evacuation began, gusts of wind blew their blankets while nurses and other staff huddled around the sick on gurneys, some holding IVs and other equipment.

NYU did send home about 100 of its 400 patients earlier Monday to lighten its load, starting the evacuation of the remaining 300 patients at about 7:30 p.m. when backup generators began to fail, Clair said. There were no injuries during relocation.

The scene was reminiscent of hospital evacuations in New Orleans after Katrina, with patients being carried down stairs on stretchers because elevators were out, and nurses squeezing oxygen bags for them because of lack of power to run breathing machines.

The difference is that in New Orleans, patients were trapped in flooded hospitals; in New York, dozens of ambulances could get through to move patients to safety.

The hospital blamed the severity of Sandy and higher-than-expected storm surge that flooded its basement but had little else to say beyond a short statement emailed to reporters after the evacuation was complete.

"At this time, we are focusing on assessing the full extent of the storm's impact on all of our patient care, research and education facilities," the statement said.

Most of the power outages in lower Manhattan, where Tisch is located, were due to an explosion at an electrical substation, Consolidated Edison said. It wasn't clear whether flooding or flying debris caused the explosion, said John Miksad, senior vice president for electric operations at Con Edison.

At NYU, sporadic telephone service made it difficult for the hospital to notify relatives where patients were taken. It relied instead on receiving hospitals to notify families.

Until the generators failed, Chu considered herself and her new baby out of harm's way. By the time she was evacuated, the streets were eerily silent and the night sky lit up by emergency lights of waiting ambulances.

"My son will appreciate this someday," she said.

Try these treats to make your Halloween complete | Food & Drink ...

JULIAN BRUNT/SPECIAL TO THE SUN HERALDSweet potato slices can be made into jack-o'-lanterns for a homemade Halloween treat.

Halloween doesn't have to be all about sweets and unhealthy things.

With a little imagination and thought you can add some fun and delicious alternatives to the holiday. Even if you are not a baker or candy maker, a stroll through Google options will result in a surprising list of good things to eat that are not that difficult to make.

I love the idea that I found at babble.com of making jack-o'-lantern sweet potato fries. Mississippi does produce some of the best sweet potatoes in the world and so it seems natural to include a recipe using local produce.

If you are from north of the Mason-Dixon Line please do not confuse our sweet potato with a yam, botanically they are completely different.

Vardaman, a small town on Mississippi 8 in the north part of the state, claims to be the Sweet Potato Capital of the World.

It is a community of just more than one thousand people, but has more than 20,000 acres planted is sweet potatoes.

Their claim is not based on the numbers of sweet potatoes harvested, but in the sweetness of the potatoes.

If you can find sweet potatoes from Vardaman be sure to give them a try.

JACK-O'-LANTERN SWEET POTATO FRIES

2 large sweet potatoes

1/4 cup oil

A pinch of salt

1/8 teaspoon cinnamon

1/8 teaspoon (or less) cayenne

Peel the sweet potatoes and remove the ends of each so that you have a cylinder shape. Using a sharp knife, maybe a paring knife is best, cut a small "V" along the top of each, this marks the top of the head. Hold the potato in a cloth and be very careful to control the knife. Now slice the potatoes into 1/8 inch slices, try to make them as uniform as possible. Using the same knife carve a jack-o'-lantern face into each slice. Place the oil and spices in a resealable bag, add the potato slices and toss, making sure each is coated well. Place the sweet potatoes on a cookie sheet, spacing them evenly and bake in an oven preheated to 400 degrees for 20 minutes, or until golden brown around the edges. Remove and allow to cool before serving.

Hot apple cider

Hot apple cider is another treat that seems to go well this time of the year-- at Halloween a spicy drink just seems even better. In many parts of the nation where apples are grown, hot apple cider has been a holiday drink enjoyed for generations. This can be turned into an adult beverage by adding a little rum. I found this recipe on the Food Network, and it was contributed by the super chef Emeril Lagasse.

HOT APPLE CIDER

1 sweet apple

2 teaspoons whole cloves

1 thinly sliced orange

1/2 cup light brown sugar

2 quarts apple cider

1 teaspoon allspice

1 pinch grated nutmeg

Cinnamon sticks for garnish (very inexpensive at the Asian markets)

Optional: 1 cup of your favorite rum

Stud the apples with the cloves, evenly spacing them. In a sauce pan combine all the ingredients, leaving out only the rum if you decide to use it. Simmer for about 10 minutes, and then add the rum. Pour into mugs, if you have mugs with a holiday theme that would be best, garnish with the cinnamon sticks and serve immediately.

This idea that I got from PBS's "Kitchen Explorers" is simple and should be fun for the kids. Apples are the main ingredient, but I added peanut butter for something a little different.

MONSTER MOUTH APPLE SLICES

2-4 apples

Almond slices

Chunky peanut butter

Lemon juice

Cut the apples into quarters, cut out the core and then cut a small wedge (the mouth) into the skin side of each apple. Mix 2 tablespoons of lemon juice in 2 cups of water and dip the apples in so they will not turn brown. Place a small dab of peanut butter in each mouth (the tongue) and then insert the slivered almonds on both sides of the mouth for the teeth. Arrange on a platter and serve at room temperature.

As long as we are thinking about apples why not take the plunge and make homemade applesauce? Folks in the South have been making and eating this simple side dish for a long time, but serving it hot along with a scoop of vanilla ice cream turns it into a great Halloween dessert. The French have a variety of recipes that resemble our applesauce like marmalade de pommes, but they also bake them whole, pommes gratinnes, and they bake them stuffed with butter and sugar, pommes bonne femme. The Italians get into the act with their salsa alle mele too, so you see this is a universally accepted good idea.

HOMEMADE APPLESAUCE

4-6 apples

1 cup pulp in orange juice

4 slices lemon peel

2 tablespoons white sugar

2 tablespoons dark brown sugar

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1 cup water

Peel and core the apples, then cut them into cubes. Add all of the ingredients into a pot large enough to comfortably hold everything and simmer with the lid on for at least 30 minutes. When the apples are soft remove from the heat and allow to cool slightly. Place in a food processor and mash, but be careful not make to them too smooth; you want to have some texture. The mixture can be mashed by hand if you prefer. Serve in small bowls, or wine glasses, and top with vanilla ice cream. This dessert can be garnished with raisins and nuts if you like. Make sure to serve immediately as the ice cream will melt quickly.
