German researchers find possible 'internet addiction gene ...

Internet addiction is real, researchers in Germany say, and they?ve found a genetic variation that might have something to do with it.?The study in question, carried out by the University of Bonn and Central Institute of Mental Health in Mannheim, is published in the?September 2012 Journal of Medical Addiction.

The team at Bonn interviewed 843 people ?and found?132 revealed ?problematic behaviour? in how they handle the internet. In other words:

All?their thoughts revolve around the internet during the day and they feel their wellbeing is severely impacted if they have to go without it.?

The researchers, teaming up with peers in Mannheim, then compared those problem users to a ?healthy? control group and found the problem users more often carried a genetic variation also linked to nicotine addiction.

The?variation, on the CHRNA4 gene, affects the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor in the brain. Nicotine from tobacco and?acetylcholine produced by the body both fit like a key into that receptor and play?a role in activating the brain?s reward system, which releases chemicals to make us feel good after such things as eating, sex or ? apparently, in light of this study ? checking our Facebook updates.

The findings prove internet addiction isn?t just a ?figment of our imagination?,?lead author Dr Christian Montag said in a?press release. ?Researchers and therapists are closing in on it.?

In what might come as a surprise, to those who assume men are more prone to becoming web-obsessed, the variation perhaps linked to internet addiction appeared to occur more frequently in women.??The sex-specific genetic finding may result from a specific subgroup of internet dependency, such as the use of social networks,? Dr Montag suggested.

Further studies will be needed to back up that suggestion and the other findings.

National Restaurant Association Shares Best Practices for National ...

Free training materials and resources for foodservice professionals and consumers available at FoodSafetyMonth.com

CHICAGO, Aug. 30, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --?The restaurant industry holds a long-standing commitment to food safety training, and new National Restaurant Association (NRA) research shows that consumers overwhelmingly value that commitment. To highlight the importance of food safety, the NRA will hold its National Food Safety Month (NFSM) campaign this September with the theme "Be Safe, Don't Cross-Contaminate." Now in its 18th year, NFSM 2012 offers free resources for both foodservice industry professionals and home cooks at FoodSafetyMonth.com.

(Photo: http://photos.prnewswire.com/prnh/20120830/DC65856-INFO )

New NRA research shows that the majority of consumers find food safety important both at restaurants and at home. According to an August 2012 survey of 1,015 American adults, virtually all (96 percent) say it is important to them to know that the restaurants they visit train employees in food safety. In addition, more than eight out of 10 (81 percent) say they would be more likely to visit a restaurant that trains all its employees in proper food safety practices.

When it comes to cooking at home, virtually all consumers say they have at least basic knowledge of food safety. Sixty-three percent say they are aware of proper food safety practices and always follow them, while 33 percent say they are familiar with some food safety practices and follow those when they can.

"Food safety is a priority year-round for the nation's nearly one million restaurant and foodservice outlets and we celebrate that commitment with September's National Food Safety Month," said Paul Hineman, executive vice president of the National Restaurant Association. "Our industry serves 130 million guests daily, making food safety training critical for restaurant employees. But, practicing food safety at home is just as important, which is why we're also providing tips for home cooks through this year's campaign."

NFSM highlights components of the NRA's ServSafe? Food Safety program ? the leading source of food safety training and certification for restaurant and foodservice industry professionals for nearly 40 years, with more than 5 million certifications issued. Because ServSafe is developed by the NRA, proceeds go toward helping improve the foodservice industry through research and education.

The NRA's survey showed that three-quarters (76 percent) of consumers say they would be more confident in a restaurant that displays food safety training certificates in public areas. Currently, less than two out of five (37 percent) have ever noticed food safety training certificates displayed in restaurants; younger consumers are much more likely to have noticed such certificates, as nearly half (49 percent) of 18 to 44-year olds say they have seen food safety certifications displayed, compared with only one-fifth (21 percent) of consumers age 55 and above.

This year's NFSM is sponsored by SCA, a global hygiene company and makers of the Tork? brand away-from-home paper products. The NRA selected SCA as the sponsor of the campaign due to the company's commitment to food safety education and dedication to hygiene product solutions.?

"We work diligently to help our customers understand the critical and often hidden hygiene hazards restaurants face that can lead to serious food safety issues if not properly addressed," said Suzanne Cohen, Foodservice Marketing Director for SCA Tissue North America. "Everyone benefits from a healthy, safe and welcoming restaurant and as a result patrons will return again and again. That is why we are partnering with the National Restaurant Association to help educate our industry on vital food safety issues."

The free National Food Safety Month 10-minute training materials for restaurant employees are broken down into five weekly sessions, with each covering how to prevent cross-contamination through: personal hygiene; hand washing; cleaning and sanitizing; correct storage, preparation and cooking; and how to prevent cross-contact of food allergens.

National Food Safety Month was created in 1994 to heighten the awareness about the importance of food safety education. Each year, a new theme with training resources is created to help reinforce proper food safety practices and procedures. For more information and resources, visit the NFSM website, ServSafe on Facebook, or join the conversation on Twitter using #foodsafetymonth.

Retro Game Network | The New Retro Gaming Community ? Final ...

?

Whoa whoa whoa! Hold the phone! Square Enix wants to charge $29, or $3-$4 per episode of there soon to be released 16-bit era style RPG for iOS and Android phones and tablets! Is that even allowed??

Sure is, and apparently, there?s some hot debates going on about whether that kind of price tag for a mobile game is completely bananas, or just what the mobile games market needed. If one is to associate price with quality, then yes, certainly Dimensions would be expected to deliver a mobile game experience par excellence.

Final Fantasy Dimensions 5037b6cc96704b6585440a41

Most gamers are not used to paying any sort of price that has two digits on it for a mobile game, so asking them to pay that kind of price for a full game may seem like a lot, which is probably you can also buy it segments, so perhaps as to not seem like such a big hit to your wallet.

Granted, the game itself looks really great, and if all goes well, should very much warrant the high (by mobile game standards) price tag. We will find out soon.

Ravens poised to take next step in crowded AFC

Two years, two close calls, and two long offseasons pondering "what if" for the Baltimore Ravens.

What if Billy Cundiff hadn't missed that chip-shot field goal against the Patriots in the AFC championship game eight months ago, the one that would have sent it to overtime? What if Baltimore's usually reliable defense held onto that seemingly comfortable 14-point halftime lead over the hated Pittsburgh Steelers in the divisional round the year before that?

In a league that rarely offers second chances ? let alone third ones ? the Ravens find themselves still searching for that Lombardi Trophy to bookend the one linebacker Ray Lewis led them to a dozen seasons ago.

Time is running out.

Lewis is 37 and noticeably slimmer but he's already logged 222 games at one of football's most demanding positions. Safety Ed Reed turns 34 next month and skipped minicamp while hinting at retirement. Quarterback Joe Flacco is entering his fifth year as a starter and running back Ray Rice is signed to a long-term deal and in his prime.

Anything less than ending the season in New Orleans will be a disappointment.

Coach John Harbaugh has preached "finish" during training camp, the one thing the Ravens haven't done on the cusp of the game's biggest stage. This may be their best ? and perhaps last ? shot at breaking through in a competitive conference in the midst of a transition.

The Steelers begin the season with eyes on a seventh championship, but are also dealing with the kind of roster turnover they've largely avoided during their latest revival.

The Patriots might be the only team in the league nursing a bigger postseason hangover than the Ravens after the New York Giants stunned them ? again ? in the Super Bowl.

Tom Brady's longtime rival Peyton Manning left Indianapolis for Denver, where the Broncos believe the four-time MVP's surgically repaired neck is strong enough to get them back to the Super Bowl for the first time since John Elway was doing his thing.

Houston finally broke the Colts' stranglehold on the AFC South when Manning sat out last season, and the Texans appear to easily be the class of that division as long as quarterback Matt Schaub, running back Arian Foster and wide receiver Andre Johnson stay healthy. The Texans won their first playoff game behind rookie T.J. Yates before falling to Baltimore in the divisional round.

"The key is that you stay focused on your goals and you stay focused on the work," coach Gary Kubiak said, "because you never know how something is going to happen."

___

AFC EAST

Perhaps no player took New England's late collapse against the Giants harder than Brady. Coming off another typically brilliant regular season, Brady was the last Patriots player in uniform in a dejected locker room after a fourth Super Bowl ring vanished. At 35, the window is starting to close on his Hall of Fame career. The offense remains dangerous as long as he's around, though the real issue will be if New England's defense can improve after finishing 31st in yards allowed and crumbling in the final moments against Eli Manning.

The New York Jets were among the NFL's most disappointing teams last fall, sliding to 8-8 as quarterback Mark Sanchez threw a season-killing 18 interceptions and opponents stopped fearing "Revis Island." New York traded for Tim Tebow in the offseason hoping the charismatic if erratic quarterback can make an impact both on the field and in the locker room. Sanchez remains the starter and appears to have kept his sense of humor. He joked the team was saving all its touchdowns for the regular season after the Jets went three straight exhibition games without reaching the end zone. The joke will be on Sanchez and coach Rex Ryan if New York takes another step back.

The Buffalo Bills got off to a hot start a year ago behind quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick. Then the team signed the QB to a contract extension and immediately started to get buyer's remorse. Buffalo went 2-8 after Fitzpatrick signed the six-year, $59 million deal. He'll need to start earning that paycheck this season, and the Bills have opened their wallets for their defense, signing end Mario Williams to give a toothless defense some bite.

The Miami Dolphins blew things up for the second time in five years, bringing in Joe Philbin as coach and giving the starting quarterback job to rookie Ryan Tannehill. To add a little appeal to a franchise that has ceded the local spotlight to LeBron James and the Miami Heat, the Dolphins signed wide receiver Chad Johnson and let HBO film its popular "Hard Knocks" training camp series with the team. The camera crew lasted longer than Johnson, perhaps a sign the Dolphins realize their problems are not a quick fix.

___

AFC NORTH

Lewis slimmed down during the spring hoping to keep his body fresh. Consider the weight Lewis shed now firmly on Flacco's shoulders. The 27-year-old who once proclaimed himself the best quarterback in football will need to play like it at times for Baltimore to excel. The aging defense will miss the presence of linebacker Terrell Suggs, out indefinitely after tearing his right Achilles tendon while playing pickup basketball.

Pittsburgh remains among the most stable franchises in the NFL, but even they aren't immune to change. In addition to the retirement of wide receiver Hines Ward and the release of linebacker James Farrior ? who have a combined four Super Bowl rings ? Pittsburgh let go offensive coordinator Bruce Arians and brought in former Kansas City coach Todd Haley. Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger likened the transition to Haley's offense to learning a new language. He'll need to get fluent in a hurry behind an injury marred offensive line.

Cincinnati coach Marvin Lewis has made a habit out of turning seemingly untenable situations into playoff berths, doing it a year ago with rookie quarterback Andy Dalton and receiver A.J. Green. Yet consistency has never been the team's trademark. The Bengals have made the postseason in consecutive years only once in franchise history.

The Browns borrowed a page from rival Cincinnati's book by going with 28-year-old rookie quarterback Brandon Weeden and third overall pick Trent Richardson at running back. The Bengals rode that kind of combination to the playoffs. The Browns would love to ride it to somewhere in the vicinity of .500. Yet Richardson spent part of the preseason dealing with a knee issue that could linger into September, and there are plenty of questions about who Weeden will throw to.

___

AFC SOUTH

The Texans could finally exhale after more than a decade of building ? and rebuilding ? landed them in the playoffs. They've got so much depth atop such a lackluster division they could stay there a while. Foster is among the league's best running backs and Schaub was in the midst of a career year before being brought down by injury.

Tennessee nearly tracked down the Texans in the final month of the season despite a lackluster performance from running back Chris Johnson as "CJ2K" became "CJBarely1K." The Titans hope to remain tight on Houston's heels behind second-year quarterback Jake Locker, whose mobility gives Tennessee's offense an added dynamic that could take pressure off Johnson.

The Indianapolis Colts felt so certain about Andrew Luck they hit the reset button on the entire franchise. Manning is gone. So is the coaching staff that took the team to the Super Bowl in 2010. The precocious Luck has looked like a wise investment during the preseason, showing the poise of a player far beyond his 22 years. Having the likes of Reggie Wayne around helps.

Jacksonville owner Shahid Khan is a master marketer who wants to pump some life into the beleaguered Jaguars and is so eager to do it he committed to playing four "home" games in London, one a year starting in 2013. At some point he hopes his team's play on the field ? and not it's travel schedule ? is headline worthy. It just won't be this season.

__

AFC WEST

Norv Turner continues to survive in San Diego despite seemingly diminishing returns. The Chargers woefully underachieved a year ago, as a series of injuries and a midseason slump allowed them to get Tebowed out of the postseason. Philip Rivers tried to largely do it himself, with woeful results. He tossed a career-high 20 interceptions; a healthy TE Antonio Gates should provide a return to normalcy. San Diego addressed its needs on defense by signing linebacker Jarret Johnson and using its first three draft picks on defensive players.

Kansas City made a stunning fall from a 2010 playoff run due to a series of injuries that gutted the roster. Running back Jamaal Charles, quarterback Matt Cassel, safety Eric Berry and tight end Tony Moeaki are all healthy. Having Romeo Crennel ? as placid as former coach Haley was fiery ? should keep the Chiefs on an even keel; so should a user-friendly schedule in the second half of the season.

The sight of Manning wearing orange and blue is going to take some getting used to. Manning felt confident enough in Denver's ability to compete for a title he spurned offers from other teams ? Arizona most notably. Going from Tebow to Manning is one of the most dramatic QB changes in recent memory. The Broncos will need to adapt quickly to be a threat in a tightly packed division.

The Oakland Raiders are so confident in Darren McFadden's health they didn't stop reliable backup Michael Bush from fleeing to Chicago. New coach Dennis Allen is trying to restore a sense of discipline to a franchise that largely ignores the trait. Quarterback Carson Palmer went 4-5 as the starter, but didn't have McFadden in his backfield. Allen's defense could help a defense that struggled in 2011. Still, Palmer will have to throw the ball eventually, and the Raiders haven't had a true No. 1 receiver since Randy Moss.

Clarke, Wade fifties take Australia to 272-8

Michael Clarke and Matthew Wade hit attractive half-centuries to take Australia to 272-8 against Afghanistan in the day-night international on Saturday.

Clarke hit a 94-ball 75 while Wade also made 75 off 108 balls before Afghanistan's bowlers put the brakes on the scoring on a dry Sharjah Stadium pitch which made strokeplay difficult under sultry 35-plus degree heat.

The match is the first-ever limited overs international between the two countries and only Afghanistan's second against a full Test playing side after they played Pakistan in February this year.

Australia, who lost opener David Warner (24) to seamer Shapoor Zadran in the seventh over, were coasting along with skipper Clarke and Wade adding an invluable 131 runs for the second wicket.

But Australia lost four wickets in the space of 42 runs as off-spinner Mohammad Nabi (2-50) broke the stand by catching Wade off a return drive from his own bowling.

Wade, opening the innings in the absence of Shane Watson who is not on the tour because of injury, hit two fours and a towering six.

In his next over Nabi had debutant Glenn Maxwell caught at long-on for two to leave Australia at 172-3.

Clarke, who hit three boundaries and a six, was stumped off spinner Samiullah Shinwari as he jumped out of the crease but missed the ball.

Michael Hussey (49) and George Bailey (23) added a rapid 53 for the sixth wicket in just five overs to ensure Australia put up a fighting total.

Hussey's 37-ball knock had three sixes and two fours.

Karim Sadiq took wickets in the last over to finish with 2-22.

Latest Dropbox beta adds 2-step verification

Android Central

Many of us use Dropbox in varying capacities (see what I did there?), and when we do, we often use it as crucial backup storage for data that's important to us. If it wasn't important, we probably wouldn't bother backing it up now would we? If you take your security seriously, and by now we hope you all do, you should be jumping for joy that Dropbox has added 2-step verification sign in to its latest betas.

The latest Dropbox beta follows the same principle that Google's 2-step verification does. In order to access your account you need two things: 1) something you know -- your password and 2) something you have -- your phone. And there's really no reason not to take security into your own hands and add that second level in order to help prevent the worst from happening. If you haven't already, go pick up the Dropbox app from the Google Play Store at the link above, and if you're interested in setting up 2-step verification for your account, see us after the break for a better in-depth explanation

USADA to strip Lance Armstrong of 7 Tour titles

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? The U.S. Anti-Doping Agency said Thursday night it will strip Lance Armstrong of his unprecedented seven Tour de France titles after he declared he was finished fighting the drug charges that threaten his legacy as one of the greatest cyclists of all time.

Travis Tygart, USADA's chief executive, said Armstrong would also be hit with a lifetime ban on Friday.

Still to be heard from was the sport's governing body, the International Cycling Union, which had backed Armstrong's legal challenge to USADA's authority.

Armstrong, who retired last year, declined to enter USADA's arbitration process ? his last option ? because he said he was weary of fighting accusations that have dogged him for years. He has consistently pointed to the hundreds of drug tests that he has passed as proof of his innocence during his extraordinary run of Tour titles stretchingfrom1999-2005.

"There comes a point in every man's life when he has to say, "Enough is enough." For me, that time is now," Armstrong said in a statement sent to The Associated Press. He called the USADA investigation an "unconstitutional witch hunt."

"I have been dealing with claims that I cheated and had an unfair advantage in winning my seven Tours since 1999," he said. "The toll this has taken on my family and my work for our foundation and on me leads me to where I am today - finished with this nonsense."

USADA reacted quickly and treated Armstrong's decision as an admission of guilt, hanging the label of drug cheat on an athlete who was a hero to thousands for overcoming life-threatening testicular cancer and for his foundation's support for cancer research.

"It is a sad day for all of us who love sport and athletes," Tygart said. "It's a heartbreaking example of win at all costs overtaking the fair and safe option. There's no success in cheating to win."

Tygart said the agency can strip the Tour titles, though Armstrong disputed that as he insisted his decision is not an admission of drug use, but a refusal to enter an arbitration process he believes is unfair.

"USADA cannot assert control of a professional international sport and attempt to strip my seven Tour de France titles," he said. "I know who won those seven Tours, my teammates know who won those seven Tours, and everyone I competed against knows who won those seven Tours."

USADA maintains that Armstrong has used banned substances as far back as 1996, including the blood-booster EPO and steroids as well as blood transfusions ? all to boost his performance.

The 40-year-old Armstrong walked away from the sport in 2011 without being charged following a two-year federal criminal investigation into many of the same accusations he faces from USADA. The federal probe was closed in February, but USADA announced in June it had evidence Armstrong used banned substances and methods ? and encouraged their use by teammates. The agency also said it had blood tests from 2009 and 2010 that were "fully consistent" with blood doping.

Included in USADA's evidence were emails written by Armstrong's former U.S. Postal Service teammate Floyd Landis, who was stripped of his 2006 Tour de France title after a positive drug test. Landis' emails to a USA Cycling official detailed allegations of a complex doping program on the team.

USADA also said it had 10 former Armstrong teammates ready to testify against him. Other than suggesting they include Landis and Tyler Hamilton, both of whom have admitted to doping offenses, the agency has refused to say who they are or specifically what they would say.

"There is zero physical evidence to support (the) outlandish and heinous claims. The only physical evidence here is the hundreds of (doping) controls I have passed with flying colors," Armstrong said.

Armstrong sued USADA in Austin, where he lives, in an attempt to block the case and was supported by the UCI. A judge threw out the case on Monday, siding with USADA despite questioning the agency's pursuit of Armstrong in his retirement.

"USADA's conduct raises serious questions about whether its real interest in charging Armstrong is to combat doping, or if it is acting according to less noble motives," such as politics or publicity, U.S. District Judge Sam Sparks wrote.

Now the ultra-competitive Armstrong has done something virtually unthinkable for him: He has quit before a fight is over.

"Today I turn the page. I will no longer address this issue, regardless of the circumstances. I will commit myself to the work I began before ever winning a single Tour de France title: serving people and families affected by cancer, especially those in underserved communities," Armstrong said.

Armstrong could have pressed his innocence in USADA's arbitration process, but the cyclist has said he believes most people have already made up their minds about whether he's a fraud or a persecuted hero.

It was a stunning move for an athlete who built his reputation on not only beating cancer, but forcing himself through grueling offseason workouts no one else could match, then crushing his rivals in the Alps and the Pyrenees.

Although he had already been crowned a world champion and won individual stages at the Tour de France, Armstrong was still relatively unknown in the U.S. until he won the epic race for the first time in 1999. It was the ultimate comeback tale: When diagnosed with cancer, doctors had given him less than a 50 percent chance of survival before surgery and brutal cycles of chemotherapy saved his life.

Armstrong's riveting victories, his work for cancer awareness and his gossip-page romances with rocker Sheryl Crow, fashion designer Tory Burch and actress Kate Hudson made him a figure who transcended sports.

His dominance of the Tour de France elevated the sport's popularity in America to unprecedented levels. His story and success helped sell millions of the "Livestrong" plastic yellow wrist bracelets, and enabled him to enlist lawmakers and global policymakers to promote cancer awareness and research. His Lance Armstrong Foundation has raised nearly $500 million since its founding in 1997.

Created in 2000, USADA is recognized by Congress as the official anti-doping agency for Olympic sports in the United States. Its investigators joined U.S. agents during the federal probe, and Tygart had dismissed Armstrong's lawsuit as an attempt at "concealing the truth." He said the agency is motivated by one goal ? exposing cheaters in sport.

Others close to Armstrong were caught up in the charges: Johan Bruyneel, the coach of Armstrong's teams, and three members of the medical staff and a consultant were also charged. Bruyneel is taking his case to arbitration, while two medical team staffers and consulting doctor Michele Ferrari didn't formally contest the charges and were issued lifetime ban by USADA. Ferrari later said he was innocent.

In a sport rife with cheaters, Armstrong has been under constant suspicion since the 1990s from those who refused to believe he was a clean rider winning cycling's premier event against a field of doped-up competition.

He had tense public disputes with USADA, the World Anti-Doping Agency, some former teammates and assistants and even Greg LeMond, the first American to win the Tour de France.

Through it all, Armstrong vigorously denied any and all hints, rumors and direct accusations he was cheating. He had the blazing personality, celebrity and personal wealth needed to fight back with legal and public relations battles to clear his name ? and he did, time after time.

Armstrong won his first Tour at a time when doping scandals had rocked the race. He was leading the race when a trace amount of a banned anti-inflammatory corticosteroid was found in his urine; cycling officials said he was authorized to use a small amount of a cream to treat saddle sores.

After Armstrong's second victory in 2000, French judicial officials investigated his Postal Service team for drug use. That investigation ended with no charges, but the allegations kept coming.

Armstrong was criticized for his relationship with Ferrari, who was banned by Italian authorities over doping charges in 2002. Former personal and team assistants accused Armstrong of having steroids in an apartment in Spain and disposing of syringes that were used for injections.

In 2004, a Dallas-based promotions company initially refused to pay him a $5 million bonus for winning his sixth Tour de France because it wanted to investigate allegations raised by media in Europe. Testimony in that case included former teammate Frankie Andreu and his wife, Betsy, saying Armstrong told doctors during his 1996 cancer treatments that he had taken a cornucopia of steroids and performance-enhancing drugs.

Two books published in Europe, "L.A. Confidential" and "L.A. Official," also raised doping allegations and, in 2005, French magazine L'Equipe reported that retested urine samples from the 1999 Tour showed EPO use.

Armstrong fought every accusation with denials and, in some cases, lawsuits against the European media outlets that reported them.

But he showed signs that he was tiring of the never-ending questions. Armstrong retired (for the first time) in 2005 and almost immediately considered a comeback before deciding to stay on the sidelines, in part, because he didn't want to keep answering doping questions.

"I'm sick of this," Armstrong said in 2005. "Sitting here today, dealing with all this stuff again, knowing if I were to go back, there's no way I could get a fair shake ? on the roadside, in doping control, or the labs."

Three years later, Armstrong was 36 and itching to ride again. He came back to finish third in the 2009 Tour de France.

Armstrong raced in the Tour again in 2010, under the cloud of the federal criminal investigation. Early last year, he quit the sport for good, but made a brief return as a triathlete until the USADA investigation shut him down.

During his sworn testimony in the dispute over the $5 million bonus, Armstrong said he wouldn't take performance enhancing drugs because he had too much to lose.

"(The) faith of all the cancer survivors around the world. Everything I do off the bike would go away, too," Armstrong said then. "And don't think for a second I don't understand that. It's not about money for me. Everything. It's also about the faith that people have put in me over the years. So all of that would be erased."

Florida Gators coach Will Muschamp says team will use Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel as QBs in season opener

Gators to use two QBs

Florida will play both sophomore quarterbacks in its season opener against Bowling Green, coach Will Muschamp said Friday.

Jacoby Brissett and Jeff Driskel have been competing since the spring for the starting job, and that competition will now continue into at least the first week of the season.

?Both guys will play in the first game,? Muschamp said. ?They both deserve the right to play. They?ve earned that, and they both deserve the right to start. They both have had really good camps.?

Muschamp said both have near identical statistics through fall camp and that the distribution of snaps in the game and how they will be divided ? whether it be by quarter, half or drive ? has yet to be determined.

Muschamp said he came to the conclusion to play both in the season opener after the team?s second scrimmage. A third scrimmage scheduled for Tuesday was rained out.

?Again, we can win with both guys. I?ve said that all along,? Muschamp said. ?Nothing has changed my opinion through this camp, and how these guys have competed and managed our team. We?ve tried to put them in tough situations and they?ve both handled it well. I think as we work into competition on game day, we?ll see if there is some separation. I think that?s the next step.?

Injury report

Offensive tackle Matt Patchan (pectoral strain) will miss the season opener.

Junior Buck linebacker Ronald Powell (ACL) has started cutting and changing direction, part of his last phase of rehab. Freshman offensive tackle D.J. Humphries (MCL) is expected to return to practice Tuesday or Wednesday, Muschamp said. And safety De?Ante Saunders is not practicing because of a pulled hamstring.

The Best Way To Cook A Wonderful Crock Pot Potato Recipe

Nowadays there are thousands of options for crock pot recipes. You can select from the traditional pot roast to chicken stew to a more interesting enchilada or pizza casserole recipe. It?s possible to cook practically anything in a crock pot, but have you ever though about the plain old potato? Most people would not think of cooking side dishes in a slow cooker since generally these appliances are used for making one pot meals. One really great way to bring a new side dish to the table is by creating a delicious crock pot potato recipe.

A Bit About the Potato Itself

Most likely, you?ve never given the potato much thought other than whether or not to use one or two ?dolups of Daisy? on your baked potato. Potatoes are so common place we tend to stick with what we?ve grown up with or know best, basic mashed or french fried. The potato does, however, have a rich and interesting history, and can be researched as far back in history as four thousand years ago to Peru. However, when it was first brought to the European continent it was not exactly a big hit because the people at the time believed potatoes to be harbingers of disease. Wow, humans have certainly come a long way.

Tips for Storing Potatoes Properly

Now that we are no longer afraid of potatoes (although I am a bit frightened of the carbs at times,) they have a standard place on most family dinner tables. In fact, the average American person will consume over one hundred pounds of potatoes annually. That?s about one potato each and every day. So, with all of these potatoes being purchased and consumed, it?s probably a good idea to know how to store them properly. Cooking hard or soggy potatoes in a crock pot recipe will not work, so you will need a container to keep them in. Many folks opt for an everyday brown paper sack from the grocery store. Potatoes should be kept in a cool, dry location, preferably off of the floor.

Cheesy Scalloped Crock Pot Potatoes

10 large potatoes, thinly sliced

2 large onions, chopped

2 cans cheddar cheese soup, condensed

1 cup milk

In a small bowl, mix soup with milk. In crock pot, layer one half the potatoes and one half the chopped onions; spread one half the soup-milk mixture. Repeat layering using rest of ingredients. Cover and cook on low for 6-8 hours or high for 3-4 hours.

Do not let your crock pot be used solely for stews and soups. Get that nifty little appliance out and cook all kinds of wonderful new dishes, preferably a nice side dish like our Cheesy Scalloped Potato recipe above. This recipe is great for large groups and will travel well in today?s convenient slow cookers. Look for more great side dish recipes online at the numerous recipe and cooking websites available.

oh yah! mashed potatoes!!! yum?.. well its way, way easier to buy the dry potato flakes like Betty Crocker brands and prepare it like what the box says but instead of using mike like it says in the box, try using heavy cream! and be generous on the butter and add freshly cracked black pepper, salt to taste. Also you my be tempted to try adding garlic and onion powder too! add more flavor, substitute the water with chicken broth ?.. or you can try cooking fresh potatoes , just cook them till they crumble if you put a fork to it, Cut them up into quarters so they cook faster that way.The cooking time vary depending on how big of a batch you make, try using a hand mixer to mash the taters than just add the cream and butter you can heat the cream and butter up and add the seasonings then. its worth trying it

Roanoke, Virginia (PRWEB) July 30, 2012

Lakeside Analytics, Inc. today announced the introduction of the Home Cooking Academy online cooking classes, http://www.HomeCookingAcademy.com, the first website to provide a structured learning environment that focuses on both cooking mechanics and cooking thought processes.

?Home cooks today are in serious need of practical instruction on how to be creative, cook with what they have, and make meals not just delicious, but also attractive and aromatic. So much of cooking instruction today is either self-serve, assuming the cook knows what they need to know, or teaches how to follow recipes, said Mark Jala, founder of the Home Cooking Academy. That is what the Home Cooking Academy was created to address.

While on his own quest years ago to learn how to improve his own cooking skills, Jala attended local cooking classes, online cooking classes, purchased cookbooks and magazines, watched cooking shows, and visited recipe websites. He discovered he could make a recipe very well, but lacked the understanding of how all the information he learned tied together to make a consistently delicious meal. Through years of additional research, Jala developed his own exclusive training method he calls the MITPAC Formula which helps students understand not just the mechanics of cooking, but also the thought processes.

The initial response to the Home Cooking Academy has been exciting, continued Mark Jala. When a cook experiences my exclusive MITPAC Formula they finally come to understand how important everything is when preparing and presenting a meal. Learning how cooking methods relates to presentation, which relates to techniques, which relates to ingredients, is fundamental to creating a delicious meal at home.

I come across folks who wish they could whip up a tasty meal but dont know the thought processes of meal creation or what is compatible with certain key ingredients. I dont necessarily care where it comes from or the Latin name of it. I want to know what that ingredient goes with. I provide that information in the Academy, added Jala. Since we eat with our eyes first, presentation is important to build anticipation. I emphasize plating tips whether individual plates or family style buffet.

When a student at the http://www.HomeCookingAcademy.com, one will learn each month:

Due to the rise in popularity of the self-help genre and how much cash is searching for it, it could be suggested that it is similar and other in comparison to psychology. For example, mindset is equipped with much to do with assisting your self but with the aid of an expert. They are different, but pull on very similar principles.

Religion Not A Barrier To HIV Testing, Treatment, Study Finds ...

By Kaiser GH Update

?Preachers who promise divine healing have often been blamed for turning desperate HIV-positive people against their life-prolonging antiretroviral (ARV) medication and risking their health, but recent research suggests that religious beliefs may not be a barrier to treatment after all,? IRIN/Plus News reports. ?A survey published in the medical journal HIV Medicine in June found that strong religious beliefs about faith and healing among black Africans living in London were unlikely to act as a barrier to accessing HIV testing and ARV treatment,? the news service writes, adding, ?The 246 respondents described themselves as Christians, including Roman Catholics, and Muslims. Only 1.2 percent said they did not belong to a religion.? ?The results reinforce previous African studies, which found that the decision to start treatment is usually based on the level of education and knowledge of ARVs, rather than religion,? the news service notes (8/22).

Q&A on Expanded NCAA Women's Tourney Bracket

August 23, 2012

by Corey McLaughlin | LaxMagazine.com | Twitter

Thirteen conference champions will now receive automatic qualifying berths to the NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament, starting in 2013.

Last week's news that the NCAA Division I women's lacrosse tournament field will expand from 16 to 26 teams for the 2013 season means one thing for sure: more teams will have a chance to win a national title.

But how will an expanded bracket look? Will selection criteria change, or do costs associated with travel become more of an issue with a greater number of teams competing? NCAA Division I women's lacrosse committee chair Candice Lee met with members of the media Wednesday to discuss those questions and more.

Lee, also an associate athletic director at Vanderbilt, is the outgoing chair whose one-year term ends at the end of August. She addressed a variety of topics, including deflecting any credit for the decision and saying expansion was talked about for at least four years.

As an aside, the 2013 final four site has not yet been announced, but an announcement is expected by mid-September.

What considerations are being made for travel to minimize costs and how will those considerations affect the way the tournament is seeded?

CL: There is guiding principle that we use currently and I think it would probably be the same with the new bracket. We try to build in the least number of [plane] flights possible. That's really a directive from the NCAA. Although the field is expanding I would image that we would continue to do that. We try to stay true to a seed, when we're seeding teams, so I think it would continue. But geography does come into play when you begin talking about limiting the number of flights.

There is not a hard and fast number [of flights] but once we look at the bracket and we seed and we stay as true as possible to the seeds then we have to look at flight considerations. We're going to our best to manage it, stay true to the bracket but have the least number of flights. It's a challenge in building the best bracket but that's the principle that we're committed to following, and that we have to follow. There's not that much you can do once it's established who the 26 teams are. Then you just have to manage it the best you can with your principles and trying to keep the number of flights down.

Will at-large selection criteria change at all?

No. The committee reserves the right to adjust selection criteria as they see fit for the following year, but we haven't made any dramatic changes to selection criteria so that process would be the same. We'll be looking at everyone's performance throughout the year and use the same criteria that we did before.

Was there any consideration for regionalizing the tournament with regional pods?

Yes. We looked at various different ways on how to structure the bracket. The one that we confirmed was the one that caused us the least amount of problems, and did not disrupt the student-athlete experience. That's the primary thing, creating a nice championship experience for these kids, basically trying to keep the same format we had now if at all possible with limiting impact on travel and final exams and that kind of thing. We did talk about regionalizing it, but thought that the bracket we came up with was best.

The top eight teams will still be seeded, correct?

Yes, we will seed the top eight teams, but only the top six will get a bye and seeds seven and eight will play in the first round, but they will be hosting. All of the top eight seeds will host.

Will this expansion have any effect on television exposure?

I don't know I can answer that with certainty. I would hope it continues to show how really exciting the sport is. The fact that the bracket has expanded and that more schools are choosing to sponsor women's lacrosse, that shows there is great support for the sport. Like anything else, TV will pick up what's popular and what people want to see. We hope that people will want to continue to see women's lacrosse.

Why 26 teams and not 24 or 32?

Twenty four was really the number that the committee started with. That was the magic number initially, but then when we did a review of all the conferences that would be eligible to be automatic qualifiers, that was 13. Because we have to hold to the principle where we have to reserve 50 percent of the bracket for at-large, 26 is the magic number because you have 13 conferences that will be automatic qualifiers. Going into this year, we still had play-in games. Twenty-six is great because it eliminates the play-in games. You just have outright conference champions that will have access to post-season. For the committee, that was a priority and 26 makes sense when you look at the principles.

If there is another conference added in the future, would you go back to a play-in format if needed?

Play-in games are used to meet the NCAA criteria, the AQ guidelines. Ideally you want to not have play-in games, but I hope that this is a problem committee's in the future will have to content with regularly because it means that the game is growing.

With eight days left as chair of the committee, how does this fit in to what you've done as committee chair?

I appreciate the question, but the changes you see is the work of an entire committee, but the work of several committees. These things don't get changed in a year. This is my fourth year on the committee and first as chair and I can tell you that coming on the committee in my first year this was part of the conversation. I would be remiss if I took credit. My time came up to be the chair. But if you're going to put the responsibility on the chair then you have to recognize last year's chair, Teddy Burns, and Ryan Bamford, who was the chair before that, as well as all the men and women who participated. This is truly a group effort. I would certainly give recognition to [NCAA associate director of championships] D'Ann Keller because she really took it upon herself to understand the sport. It was new to her just like it was new to me. We started at the same time. This is her doing. This is all the conference commissioners who were interested in growing the sport. This is administrators and coaches who had voices and made themselves heard. This is student-athletes who play women's lacrosse who are showing that it's exciting and we need to continue expanding.
