Jim Rash, Nat Faxon Moved Film Production To Steve Carell's Family Vacation Spot (VIDEO)

Nat Faxon and Jim Rash must have really felt they needed Steve Carell for their new movie, "The Way Way Back." They certainly went to great lengths to ensure his involvement, as they told Jay Leno on "The Tonight Show."

They started by pleading with him in a long letter. But while Carell said that he liked the script, their shooting time was when he spends time with his family in Boston. With Carell not wanting to miss this time with his family, Faxon and Rash came up with a solution.

"And so, we said, 'What if we shot it where you vacation with your family?'" Faxon told Leno. "And that was enough to do it. And so, we shot it in his backyard.? Ironically, they even checked out Carell's family house when they were scouting locations for the movie, though they didn't realize it was his at the time. Things might have gotten more intimate had they selected it for filming.

The comedians -- who wrote Oscar-winner ?The Descendants? -- pulled together an all-star cast for the movie, including Maya Rudolph, Toni Collette, Sam Rockwell and Allison Janney, but they all had to go to Carell's family vacation spot to be in the film.

"The Way, Way Back" is currently in theaters nationwide, and getting great reviews. It currently has an 83 percent "Fresh" rating at Rotten Tomatoes. "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" airs weeknights at 11:35 p.m. ET on NBC.

TV Replay scours the vast television landscape to find the most interesting, amusing, and, on a good day, amazing moments, and delivers them right to your browser.

Chiefs' Smith getting first reps of training camp

ST. JOSEPH, Mo. (AP) ? The first pass that Alex Smith threw on Tuesday was to Tony Moeaki, who might have a hard time making the Kansas City Chiefs after an injury-plagued start to his career.

Then came passes to Tyler Shoemaker, Rico Richardson and Junior Hemingway. It was about as modest of a start as you could get to Smith's first training camp with the Chiefs ? a bunch of throws to wide receivers who may not be around in six weeks.

Still, those passes on an unseasonably cool morning on the campus of Missouri Western represented the first step by Smith toward fulfilling expectations that have steadily grown ever since he was acquired from the 49ers this past offseason.

"The entire locker room is hungry. Expectations are high," Smith said, "and I think that's a good thing. The fun thing now is that we'll put the pads on and get to playing real football."

The Chiefs have been trying to weather instability at quarterback for the past seven seasons, trying everybody from Tyler Palko to Damon Huard to Matt Cassel to find someone who fits.

There have been some modest successes ? Cassel was quite good a few years ago, when the Chiefs went a surprising 10-6 and won the AFC West. But he regressed so mightily last season that Cassel was ultimately benched for Brady Quinn, who didn't fare a whole lot better.

The shaky quarterback play was a big reason the Chiefs had one of the lowliest offenses in the league, and why the team went 2-14 to match the worst in franchise history.

So when Chiefs chairman Clark Hunt hired Andy Reid to be the new head coach and John Dorsey as the new general manager, one of their first moves was to upgrade the game's most important position. They wasted such little time in agreeing to a trade for Smith that they had to wait for the new league year to begin for it to be consummated.

Smith had become the hottest trade commodity in the league after flourishing two years ago, when he led the 49ers to the NFC championship game. The former No. 1 overall pick started nine games last season, but was sidelined by a head injury midway through the year.

That opened the door for Colin Kaepernick, who sprinted right through it. Kaepernick played so well that 49ers coach Jim Harbaugh made him the starter the rest of the season, forcing Smith to watch from the sideline as the team played in the Super Bowl.

Smith has said that he felt like he lost his job in San Francisco without doing anything wrong, and that it's only made him hungrier to succeed with Kansas City.

"It's a fresh start," he said. "It's a fresh beginning for everybody."

Running back Shaun Draughn said Smith already has filled a massive leadership void that had developed within the Chiefs over the past couple seasons.

"He's very confident in what he's doing. I think the guys are really starting to rally around him," Draughn said. "We didn't know how he'd come in and take charge, but he's done a great job. His silent confidence, his leadership ? he doesn't say much but he gets the job done."

Smith is working with a hodge-podge of primarily rookies this week. The rest of the squad, including top playmakers Dwayne Bowe and Jamaal Charles, will report on Thursday ahead of the team's first full-squad workout on Friday.

Until then, Smith is squeezing in as many reps as possible with whomever he can find.

"You've had six weeks off," he said. "As far as a quarterback goes, you can throw to air and throw to receivers, but you can't really simulate seven-on-seven, you can't simulate 11-on-11, so it's a few days of work to get back into things.

"When the rest of the guys get here," Smith said, "we're hitting the ground running."

Notes: The Chiefs are still speaking with the agent of No. 1 overall pick Eric Fisher, but Reid said a deal with the right tackle has not been reached. Fisher won't report to camp until he signs a contract. ... Rookie S Sanders Commings left midway through practice with a shoulder injury. ... S Malcolm Bronson was put on the PUP list with a knee injury that he sustained while in college at McNeese State.

Utah ISP breaks silence over government server installed on its network

Utah ISP talks about the server the government forcibly installed onto its network

When the government comes knocking on your door, you kind of have to cooperate with them or face the consequences. That's the situation Pete Ashdown, CEO of Utah ISP XMission, was faced with in 2010 after receiving a warrant under the Foreign Intelligence Service Act (FISA). The warrant, coming in at just three or four pages, was perfectly clear: install a rack-mount server on your network to track every last bit going in and out from one of your customers, and don't say anything to anyone about this. Ashdown's lawyer said the request was indeed legit, and the box stayed there for a little over half a year. So why talk about it now? Because Pete, like the rest of us, wants a bit of transparency, even if there's a risk the G-Men will come "come back and haunt" him.

'The Vampire Diaries' cast tease next season

SAN DIEGO (AP) ? There's no peace for Mystic Falls.

The cast and crew of "The Vampire Diaries" gave shrieking Comic-Con fans a taste of what's to come in the fifth season during the CW supernatural series' presentation Saturday at the pop-culture convention. In footage shown before the panel, mind-bending baddie Silas addressed a group of Mystic Falls townsfolk while appearing as Paul Wesley's Stefan. He not-so-discreetly informed the crowd that he wants to control them.

"Vampire Diaries" executive producers Julie Plec and Caroline Dries said the new season will also deal with the ramifications of Nina Dobrev's Elena choosing romance with Ian Somerhalder's Damon over Stefan, as well as Katherine, the ancient vampire character played by Dobrev, involuntarily becoming human.

"It is Mystic Falls and essentially you can't be that happy for that long, so there's always got to be that drama," said Somerhalder.

The new season will also see some characters going off to college.

"Why are we pursuing higher education?" joked Wesley. "We're all murderers."

"Vampire Diaries" stars Dobrev, Somerhalder and Wesley were joined on the panel by co-stars Kat Graham and Candice Accola.

"The Vampire Diaries" returns Oct. 10.

Newly Discovered Dinosaur Sure Had One 'Supersize Schnoz'

An artist's image of Nasutoceratops titusi.

Lukas Panzarin for the Natural History Museum of Utah

The Proceedings of the Royal Society politely refers to it as a "short-snouted horned dinosaur."

National Geographic is less reserved and gets right to the obvious point: "Paleontologists have discovered a new dinosaur, a Triceratops relative with a supersize schnoz that once roamed present-day Utah."

The Natural History Museum of Utah said Wednesday of the discovery made by a University of Utah graduate student in 2006 that:

"Nasutoceratops titusi possesses several unique features, including an oversized nose relative to other members of the family, and exceptionally long, curving, forward-oriented horns over the eyes. The bony frill, rather than possessing elaborate ornamentations such as hooks or spikes, is relatively unadorned, with a simple, scalloped margin.

"Nasutoceratops translates as 'big-nose horned face,' and the second part of the name honors Alan Titus, Monument Paleontologist at Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, for his years of research collaboration."

As for that schnoz, the museum adds that:

"For reasons that have remained obscure, all ceratopsids have greatly enlarged nose regions at the front of the face. Nasutoceratops stands out from its relatives, however, in taking this nose expansion to an even greater extreme. Scott Sampson, the study's lead author, stated, 'The jumbo-sized schnoz of Nasutoceratops likely had nothing to do with a heightened sense of smell ? since olfactory receptors occur further back in the head, adjacent to the brain ? and the function of this bizarre feature remains uncertain.' "

The scientists estimate that Nasutoceratops weighed about 2 1/2 tons and stretched about 15 feet. According to National Geographic, it "munched on plants in a swampy, Louisiana-like bayou."

All Things Considered is due to have more about Nasutoceratops later today. We'll add the audio of its report to the top of this post when it's ready.

Update at 4:30 p.m. ET. "A Face Only A Mother Could Love."

This dinosaur "looks like a giant bull with a parrot beak. It has a face that only a mother could love," Gregory Erickson, a paleobiologist at Florida State University, tells NPR's Rhitu Chatterjee during her report on All Things Considered.

3rd Big Cat Dies At North Texas Animal Sanctuary

WYLIE (CBSDFW.COM/AP) ? Canine distemper has claimed the life of a third big cat at an animal sanctuary in Wylie.

A spokeswoman for In-Sync Exotics Wildlife Rescue and Education Center says a male tiger named Abrams died Monday. Lisa Williams says a 12-year-old male tiger named Apollo and a 17-year-old lioness called Layla died earlier this month.

More than 20 exotic cats at the center have been diagnosed with canine distemper in recent weeks. Symptoms range from runny noses to seizures.

Owner Vicky Keahey said the park?s veterinarians initially recommended that her more than 60 tigers and lions not be vaccinated for canine distemper.? She said she was told by several animal professionals her tigers and lions were not at risk for the disease.

Wildlife officials are working with veterinarians on the outbreak. Experts believe the canine distemper was transmitted by wild raccoons.

Nets-Celtics trade? Rumors swirl of a Pierce-Garnett deal.

Nets-Celtics trade: The Brooklyn Nets and Boston Celtics might be closing in on a trade that would bring All-Stars?Kevin Garnett and Paul Pierce to Brooklyn.

By Brian Mahoney,?AP Basketball Writer / June 27, 2013

Boston Celtics center Kevin Garnett (5) congratulates forward Paul Pierce (34) during a playoffs game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden last month. The two Celtics All-Stars could soon be traded to the Brooklyn Nets, a person with knowledge of the talks said Thursday.

On the day they hosted the NBA draft, the Nets were making much bigger noise with a potential transaction that would send the two perennial All-Stars to a new Atlantic Division home.

Yahoo Sports, which first reported the talks, said the Nets would also get veteran Jason Terry from the?Celtics, while sending Gerald Wallace, Tornike Shengelia, the expiring contract of Kris Humphries, and three future first-round picks to Boston.

The person confirmed the talks to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the details were to remain private.

The deal would complete the breakup of the core that led Boston to an NBA championship and within a victory of another. The?Celtics?already let Doc Rivers leave after acquiring a draft pick from the Los Angeles Clippers.

Garnett would have to waive a no-trade clause, which he has been reluctant to do previously. But the Nets hope he would consider this time with Pierce joining him and the?Celtics' best days seemingly behind them.

The?Celtics?tumbled down the Eastern Conference standings this season, falling all the way to the No. 7 seed and getting eliminated by the New York Knicks in the first round. They have been considering moving one or both of the veterans, and this would trigger the start of a true rebuilding process.

And it would provide a huge boost to the Nets at two of their weakest positions. They struggled to settle on a starting power forward all last season, and Pierce would be immune to the lengthy offensive slumps that plagued Wallace, the starting small forward.

California tops auto theft list ? Bankrate, Inc.

California's car culture, long celebrated in such Beach Boys classics as "Little Deuce Coupe," "409" and "I Get Around," has also spawned an equally robust car theft industry, judging by the latest "Hot Spots" vehicle theft report from the National Insurance Crime Bureau.

California once again dominates the list of metropolitan statistical areas, or MSAs, where car owners and auto insurance companies were most vulnerable to theft in 2012. Communities in the Golden State claim eight of the top 10 slots:

1. Modesto, Calif.
2. Fresno, Calif.
3. Bakersfield-Delano, Calif.
4. Stockton, Calif.
5. Yakima, Wash.
6. San Francisco/Oakland/Hayward, Calif.
7. San Jose/Sunnyvale/Santa Clara, Calif.
8. Vallejo/Fairfield, Calif.
9. Spokane/Spokane Valley, Wash.
10. Redding, Calif.

Six of the California hot spots also placed in last year's top 10. Expand the list, and the state claims 14 of the top 20 best places not to park your car.

Theft goes west

In fact, the western states -- Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Oregon, Utah, Washington and Wyoming -- saw a 10.6 percent increase in vehicle theft last year. By contrast, the South was down 2.9 percent, the Midwest saw a 3.1 percent decline, and thefts in the Northeast were down 7.9 percent from the previous year.

The NICB ratings are consistent with preliminary FBI statistics for 2012 that point to a 1.3 percent national increase in vehicle thefts, following eight years of declines. The final numbers are due this fall.

So how many car thefts are we talking here? In Modesto, there were 4,260 reported thefts. But drive west to the more densely populated San Francisco Bay area, and you're looking at 28,220 thefts last year. Because the Hot Spots report is based on population, areas like Modesto with fewer total thefts but smaller populations often rank higher than areas with more stolen cars overall but a smaller incidence per capita.

Safety in Hawaii -- or at home

Where's Waldo to park without risking his ride? He'll find an absolutely safe space on the lovely isle of Maui, Hawaii, where nary a single vehicle was reported missing last year in the Kahului/Wailuku/Lahaina MSA.

The NICB recommends this "four layers of protection" approach to avoid vehicle theft and its potentially negative impact on your auto insurance rates:

? Common sense: Remember to take your keys with you, close your windows, lock your doors and park in a safe, well-lit area.
? Anti-theft devices: Invest in visible and audible alarms, brake and wheel locks and other theft-deterrent devices.
? Ride immobilizers: Prevent "hot-wiring" with smart keys, fuse cut-offs and other onboard technology that prevents thieves from starting your vehicle's engine.
? Tracking devices: Install a GPS or other tracking device that alerts you if your vehicle has been moved, and helps police locate it if it's stolen.

'Swan mom:' A Washington woman is surrogate for baby trumpeters

A Washington woman has become a surrogate 'swan mom' for a bevy of baby trumpeter swans. Each summer for 14 years she's raised hatchlings for 80 days and released them into the wild.

By Staff,?Associated Press / June 28, 2013

Five 13-day-old cygnet trumpeter swans gather around "mom", a decoy swan, in their human foster parent Martha Jordan's back yard earlier this week.

AP

All Martha Jordan has to do to get her five baby swans to run across the back yard is pull their "mom" along on a rope ? a life-size, plastic swan decoy.

The fuzzy cygnets, two weeks old, scurry to keep up in a scene that can only be described as impossibly cute.

For all intents and purposes, though, Ms. Jordan is really the baby birds' mom.

A wildlife biologist and authority on swans, Jordan agreed to raise the cygnets until they can be released into the wild.

The babies were hatched by a mating pair of swans at Northwest Trek, a wildlife park near Eatonville. In past years, some of the cygnets hatched there were lost to some of the other inhabitants of the park.

"They were becoming lunch for the bald eagles who live at the lake," Jordan said.

Jordan will raise the cygnets for about 80 days, after which they'll be released in Eastern Oregon. They become fully grown and ready to fly in just over 100 days, she said.

Though the cygnets' fledgling feathers are softer than silk, Jordan says petting them can condition the birds to human contact and make it harder for them to make it in the wild.

"I try not to handle them," she said.

Jordan has served as a foster?parent?for cygnets for 14 of the past 18 years, she said. Usually, she keeps them only for a few weeks and hands them off to another person who has room to house the cygnets as they get bigger.

An adult swan weighs from 25 to nearly 40 pounds and has a wingspan of 7? to 9 feet, according to Jordan.

The person who usually takes the swans from Jordan can't do it this year, so she is having a larger pen built in the back yard of her south Everett home.

Jordan is coordinator of the Washington Swan Stewards, a subsidiary of the Trumpeter Swan Society, a national non-profit organization. The local group provides education about swans and works on habitat conservation.

Trumpeter swans live only in North America and primarily in the Northwest. The other swan species native to the continent is the tundra swan, some of which also winter in the Northwest.

Trumpeter swans are migratory. Those that winter in Western Washington are among the 26,000 that breed in Alaska in the summer, Jordan said. They leave here in March and return in October.

Trumpeter swans are not endangered but their future is only as stable as that of the farmlands on which they depend for food in the winter, Jordan said.

Swans have historically wintered in local wetlands but as those have disappeared, the birds have adapted by landing at farms and eating the corn and other food put out for the livestock, she said. Farmers generally don't mind, Jordan said.

The Skagit Valley is the largest local wintering area, while the Stillaguamish and Snohomish valleys also attract many of the birds, she said.

Hunting Trumpeter swans in Washington state is illegal. Some of the lakes and fields where the swans land, however, are laden with lead buckshot leftover from decades ago or that's been fired at ducks or other waterfowl that may be legally hunted.

Swans ingest small pebbles as grit to help their digestion, and sometimes mistake the buckshot for pebbles, eat them and die from lead poisoning, she said.

Jordan gets paid for some of her work for the swan groups when grants are available. She goes on rescue missions in addition to banding and documenting the birds' whereabouts. But mostly she makes her living as a massage therapist, she said.

Still, she's recognized around the state as a leading authority on swans. She was asked to write the plan for minimizing the effect on swans from the demolition of the Elwha Dam, she said. Jordan confesses that she's sometimes referred to as the "swan lady."

She didn't set out to be a swan expert. Early in her career as a wildlife biologist working with other birds such as migratory geese, she frequently encountered swans and wound up studying them as part of her work.

In 1985, the state paid her to do a comprehensive swan survey.

"By that time, I was hooked on swans," she said.

It hasn't always been as much fun as watching the cygnets run across the lawn. Since 1999, more than 2,300 swans in the state have died from lead poisoning, according to the swan stewards website.

At the height of the die-off around 2003, "I was handling 4,000 pounds of dead swans," Jordan said.

Other times, she's been beaten up by swans when she got too close to a nest. Swans have claws on their webbed feet and hard edges to the front of their wings that they can swing like clubs.

They also have flexible, serrated bills. "They grab you and pinch and then twist and pull," she said.

Still, when she encounters a banded adult swan that she raised as a baby, or when people tell her stories of how swans have inspired them, it makes it all worthwhile, she said.

"You learn about humans and their connection to the land, and all that has come to me through the swan," she said.

A look into Google's visual design guidelines

Icon design

A treasure trove of cohesive design principles for developers and designers everywhere

As Google's Android matures, we all can see the shift in focus to great design. Google has long been at the forefront of the technology, offering services and features that most of us use every day, but it's clear that Mountain View now cares as much how their products look as they do how they work.

Getting a glimpse into Google's design language for Android usually means looking at the apps while you're using them, or opening up the files and studying the assets themselves. While Google offers some rudimentary suggestions at the Android developer site, that's only part of the picture. Developers and designers need to know how it all fits together. Apps, the web, and all the services under Google's umbrella.

Jon Stewart appears on Egypt's 'Daily Show'

CAIRO - Jon Stewart took his politically engaged American satire to Cairo on Friday, appearing on a show hosted by the man known as "Egypt's Jon Stewart," who has faced investigation for insulting the president and Islam.

Among barbs aimed at Egypt's ruling Islamists and others, Stewart praised host Bassem Youssef for taking risks to poke fun. "If your regime is not strong enough to handle a joke," he said, "then you don't have a regime."

Youssef is a cardiologist whose online comedy clips inspired by Stewart's "Daily Show" won him wild popularity and a prime-time TV show after the 2011 revolution that ended military rule. He paid tribute to his guest as a personal inspiration as the pair traded gags over Stewart's impressions of a visit to Cairo.

Stewart in turn played down any difficulties his wit created for him in the United States, telling Youssef: "I tell you this, it doesn't get me into the kind of trouble it gets you into. I get in trouble, but nowhere near what happens to you."

With Egypt still in ferment and elected Islamist President Mohamed Mursi facing off against liberals who fear he plans to smother personal freedoms, Youssef was released on bail after being questioned in March over alleged insults to Mursi and the channel he appears on was threatened with losing its licence.

Criticising such moves, which have also drawn reproaches for Egypt from the U.S. government, Stewart said: "A joke has never shot tear gas at a group of people in a park. It's just talk.

"What Bassem is doing ... is showing that satire can still be relevant, that it can carve out space in a country for people to express themselves. Because that's all democracy is."

He took aim at Mursi's controversial decision this week to name a member of a hardline Islamist movement blamed for a massacre of tourists at Luxor in the 1990s as governor of that city. Having been brought into the studio hooded and presented as a "spy," he spoke a few words in Arabic before saying Egypt's president had honoured him: "I am now the mayor of Luxor."

Stewart also appeared to take a gentle dig at the opposition, who hope demonstrations planned for June 30 can force Mursi from power after just a year in office. It took Americans 100 years before a president was impeached for the first time, Stewart said: "For you guys to do it in one year, it's very impressive."

Perhaps the biggest laugh in the studio, though, was for a simple crack at Egypt's perennial traffic chaos: "I know this is an ancient civilisation," he said. "Have you thought about traffic lights?"

New iPhone apps worth downloading: Play-Doh Create ABCs, XCOM: Enemy Unknown, Moscow Dash

Head into the weekend with three fun apps that will captivate your attention. The first is Play-Doh Create ABCs, a great app for kids learning their letters and who love to create stuff with virtual Play-Doh. For the more adult among us, there's XCOM: Enemy Unknown, a phenomenal strategy game making the leap from PC and consoles to iOS devices. Finally, Moscow Dash brings some old-school arcade shooting your way.

Play-Doh Create ABCsWhat?s it about? Kids can learn their ABCs and create scenes using virtual Play-Doh in this educational app.

What?s cool? The primary goal of Play-Doh Create ABCs is to help young kids learn the fundamentals of reading, while having fun doing it. The app includes fun activities, like the ability to learn how to write the letters of the ABCs (using a Play-Doh twist), and a matching game in which kids match the appropriate letter with the Play-Doh scene or creation the app presents them. There's also a free creation area where kids can use virtual Play-Doh to make their own creations and save them to the device's Camera Roll.

Who?s it for? Play-Doh is aimed at kids, particularly those just learning the ABCs, but the creation portions of the app might be fun for older users, too.

What?s it like? Check out Magic Stickers and Dora ABCs Vol. 1 for more educational fun.

XCOM: Enemy Unknown ($19.99)

XCOM: Enemy UnknownWhat?s it about? Turn-based strategy title XCOM: Enemy Unknown puts players in the role of a commander who sends squads of troops on missions to repel alien invaders.

What?s cool? XCOM was one of the best games to hit PCs and consoles last year, and now the strategy title is available for iOS players to enjoy. Players are responsible for fighting off alien invaders attacking Earth through the use of the super-secret XCOM project, which has well-trained soldiers, powerful technology, and the backing of nations from around the world. In each mission, your goal is to tactically deploy your squad around levels to take down various aliens, but you'll need to be careful ? if a soldier dies, you lose them and all their training and experience. Plus, you'll have to balance which nations you protect and which you ignore in order to keep all of them happy (and funding the project). A deep, awesome strategy experience, XCOM is definitely a game you should play, even with its slightly higher mobile price tag.

Who?s it for? Fans of strategy titles, you won't want to miss this.

What?s it like? You might also enjoy Gameloft's StarFront Collision and the simpler, but equally fun, Plants vs. Zombies.

Moscow DashWhat?s it about? Shooter Moscow Dash sends waves of enemies at players as they venture across a demon-strewn Moscow in an attempt to deliver a mysterious package.

What?s cool? Things have gone a bit crazy in Moscow, and it's your job to cross the city's various locales in order to deliver and important package. As the Courier, you'll need to fight through all kinds of crazy Moscow denizens, all of which have been turned into murderous fiends in this shooter. There are a number of weapons from which to choose to bring to bear against bad guys in Moscow Dash's side-scrolling gameplay, and if the 70 or so epsiodes aren't enough, there's also a survival mode that will push your shooter skills to the limit.

Who?s it for? If you're into old-school, side-scrolling shooters and arcade gameplay, check out Moscow Dash.

What?s it like? Grab Zombieville USA and Zombie Wonderland for more shooting and strategy.

<^>Project: A.I.R.E.S<^>

?Subject-Re: Project AIRES Update
From: Lead, Augustus Eckridge
To: Director, John Ford
Date: October 26th, 2037

Dear Director Ford,

In response to your request I?m attached the latest projections for the project to this e-mail, however I?ve also included several various reports to expedite the process. We are making great strides toward the end goal and the team has thus far gotten along with little happenings (Barring the incident with Richter), beyond the typical professional bickering, and production is moving along at pace. The base code for the world, taken from Project: ITUS, has halved the initial generation period leaving us more flexibility to produce exemplary Programs.

By altering the parameters as discussed with yourself and the board we have managed to produce exactly what we intended. Military Smart AIs capable of command and control decisions based on ?human? impulses, though the actual process has developed differently than we expected. In week two we decided to give moderator rights to the world to several selected programs within the system, who unexpectedly began taking more active roles in the projects administration. By the next week these programs had completely reorganized our initial structure of the mock-civilization within the cluster, creating a new system of interaction between themselves and even our Team Members, to our surprise we found this actually increased their absorption rates and development by 6% and have thus elected to leave the changes unmolested. For more information on this please see Report #7.

However, sir, I must admit that it is not all roses over here. My attempted to reach HR in regards to Mr. Richter?s disgruntled harassment has gone responded too. I understand that Mr. Richter was terminated on grounds of Offensive Tendencies however his personal believes cannot be forgotten here. Mr. Richter only became violent when he discovered the purpose of Project AIRES was military. He recently was permitted back in the lab to retrieve some personal files? without a security escort! I ask that you please look into this, before it becomes a greater problem.

Sincerely,
<^>
Dr. Augustus Eckridge

?

Welcome to Project: A.I.R.E.S the most advanced Artificial Intelligence development undertaking ever attempted, and you are a part of it. Not for nothing of course, you?re an expert of some type whose past has some barring on the project, be it as a programmer, a developer, or even a psychologist or virtual gamer. Why those last two? Simple, because here are AAI Inc. the programmers of the top projects aren?t just making simple top-to-bottom AI with limited information and interaction capabilities like at the turn of the millennium, these are bottom-to-top AIs that begin as little more than basic code ?eggs? and blossom into being of exponentially more possibilities than their ?dumb AI? cousins. To create these ?Smart AI? the company uses a relatively new technology otherwise reserved for the public?s entertainment. Full Immersion Virtual Reality.

By building a whole world for these AI to grow up in at an accelerated rate AAI has managed to create the world most user friendly and capable computer programs ever to exist, and you, for one reason or another, are helping to pursue that dream.

Ironically this technology has done things bass-ackwards (;3) and was first introduced in the civilian sector and not in the military. The smart AI made banking and consumer relations a breeze while at that time these boundless programs were too untrusted by authority figures to be implemented in military protocols despite the facts. However recently the military has begun sojourning into world of smart AI, and to fill that new demand AAI has created a new team to work on Project: AIRES-

-Advanced

-Infantry

-Rendering
and
-Engineering

-Sector

This project uses a newly generated Server World to raise a whole different society, where competition and conflict abound creating the perfect Artificial Intelligence for Military operations, with everything from command and control programs to attack protocols designed to command UAVs and even the shadowy world of Intelligence Programs designated to infiltrate enemy systems being breed within. You are here to expedite and enhance this system. If you, like your former team member Dylan Richter, can?t handle that then there is the door. Because it?s time to dive in.

Story:

You were recruited months ago for a specialized project involving the development of Smart AI for Advanced Artificial Intelligence Incorporated, the equivalent of a modern day Microsoft and Google combined this company has got bank. And you just couldn?t say no to the opportunity of working in the most high tech lab with the greatest programmers and doctors in the industry? or the money they offered. Too bad for you though, you would have been much better off having refused?

The team dives into the virtual world that the Programs occupy on a daily basis, using Admin accounts to adjust the world as needed so that the Programs growing within advance as needed toward their end goals. In this world of mixed time periods the programs are left to compete for advancement, gaining further storage space to expand their abilities. Almost like a video game. It worked, creating immensely human military programs which would work better with their operators than any dumb AI ever could. However this success comes at a price.

When the team dives a week or so after a disgruntled colleague was terminated the normal everyday turns into a fight for survival against a deadly virus implanted in the inescapable system. This is where the game begins.

World:

Whereas typically the programs are grown in a world that greatly resembles our own to increase their synchronization with humans and thus create greater user friendliness this system was poorly suited toward military applications. To that end the world was tweaked for Project: AIRES, becoming darker, more metallic in nature, but still keeping the essence of the outer-world, with one major exception, the developers added RPG gaming elements to the server to induce even greater combat amongst the programs for a strong survive system. With every successful venture the programs complete they gain a form of experience, like in an RPG, which determines how much space they can access in their memory cubes, and thus how effective they can be. Of course under normal circumstances Admins are exempt.

Guns were removed, replaced instead with blades, armor, and more primitive weaponry in contrast to the otherwise still modern world. The society that bloomed within this world is a strange one, with an almost religious reverence for the Admins (players) who control and manage the world, a high focus on competition and gaining ?experience? to expand their horizons, and a hierarchy centered around those most daring of programs; those that take part in the dangerous gladiatorial like games call Trials.

Admins, the avatars in which the Development Team inhabit when operating within the virtual space of the world, are different from the other programs of the AI, as they are human and have access to the system consoles. Capable of altering the server at will and using any item or process regardless of their ?experience? these beings are like gods? or were until the Virus interrupted, but that will be explored by you.

OOC: Okay, so, in case you haven?t figured yet, this world greatly resembles Tron, however uses more archaic weaponry, and operates almost like Sword Art Online in the combat, save for the existence of what is called ?Surges? which take the form of various almost magical attacks or spells.

The actual game is taking place after the team is trapped by the virus, and will involve their attempts to escape, this is how we will play, with a deadly program on the loose that is taking control of the Server, intending to conquer every program and destroy them. This includes the Admins, who now have lost their abilities and must battle to escape. It?ll be fun, trust me.

The game will take place the morning before everyone gets stuck, that will be in the real world before the team dives in. I?ve yet to decide if I want to make a reservations list for backgrounds but if you have a suggestion please feel free to post it. Thanks!

Every NBA Legend's Greatest Finals Game 7 Moment of All Time

Bill Russell earned his legacy as a champion and an engineer of finals Game 7 victories.

The Boston Celtics legend played in 10 Game 7s in his career, five of which came in the NBA Finals.

Russell earned a finals MVP in 1962 when he scored 30 points and an are-you-kidding-me 44 rebounds in the Celtics' 110-107 overtime victory. That was his best performance, but he had four others.

In Game 7 of the finals in 1957 against the St. Louis Hawks, the team that drafted him in 1956 and immediately traded him, Russell had 19 points, 32 rebounds and a key block in the final minute of the game. Ken Shouler for ESPN in 2006 did a fantastic job breaking down Russell?s play:

His first was against the St. Louis Hawks, a West powerhouse that competed in four finals in five years. The Hawks were ahead by a point in regulation with under a minute left. Jack Coleman drove in for a layup that would have upped the lead to three.

But Russell chased him down from behind and blocked his shot. Years later Tommy Heinsohn said it was "the greatest play I never saw in basketball. That sumbitch went by me like I was standing still, and I was near midcourt. He was the fastest man on the team."

Russell knocked out the Hawks again in a 122-103 Game 7 win in the 1960 finals with a 22-point, 25-rebound performance. Russell won another title via a Game 7 win in 1966 with a 95-93 win against the Los Angeles Lakers in which Russell scored 25 points and had 32 rebounds.

He was the master of Game 7s, and you can imagine the love he'd receive from today's media by winning so often.

The Celtics? all-time great went out on top by way of another victorious Game 7 even though Russell tallied nowhere near his prior finals Game 7 numbers.

In his final season, the 1969 Celtics beat the Lakers 108-106, despite the 36-year-old Russell, the team's player-coach, being limited to six points though he still had 21 rebounds. His center counterpart Wilt Chamberlain scored 18 points and had 27 rebounds, but Russell was the one who earned an 11th championship trophy.

TCL launches 5-inch 1080p Idol X (S950) smartphone with 6.99mm thickness, ultra-thin bezel

TCL launches 5inch 1080p idol X S950 smartphone with ultrathin bezel, $280 price

In a world obsessed with body image, we knew it wouldn't be long before our smartphones would start embarking on fad diets. The latest to show off its lack of curves is TCL's China-centric Idol X (S950), which can squeeze into a 6.99mm-thin pair of jeans. Just like the Alcatel version we saw at MWC, this handset comes with a 1080p display, which is bordered by an equally svelte 1.7mm bezel. Internals-wise, Android 4.2 is running on a quad-core, 1.5GHz MediaTek MT6589T chip, 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. On the imagine front, the phone has a hefty 13.1-megapixel primary camera and a two-megapixel front-facing lens. Despite those heavyweight specs, the unit is marked up for a reasonably cheap 1,699 yuan -- $280 to you and me.

Australian general delivers PSA aimed at sexists in the army

Australia's Chief of Army Lt. Gen. David Morrison has a message to all those serving in the Australian army: "Those who think that it's OK to behave in a way that demeans or exploits their colleagues have no place in this army."

Morrison's videotaped comments were made in response to an ongoing investigation into the production and distribution of "highly inappropriate material demeaning women" in the military.

In the statement shown to all members of the Australian army, Morrison says that if these allegations are proven to be true, the actions "have not only brought the Australian army into disrepute, but has let down every one of you and all of those whose past service has won the respect of our nation."

In the three-minute, no-nonsense statement Morrison goes on to implore anyone who sees wrongdoing in the ranks to come forward. "If you become aware of any individual degrading another, then show moral courage and take a stand against it," he says.

He continues, "On all operations, female soldiers and officers have proven themselves worthy of the best traditions of the Australian army. They are vital to us, maintaining our capability, now and into the future. If that does not suit you, then get out."

Morrison also warns those serving that he "will be ruthless in ridding the army of people who cannot live up to its values, and I need everyone of you to support me in achieving this. The standard you walk past is the standard you accept."

Going Viral Online Is Big Business - Business Pundit

economics-thumb

At the dawn of the Internet, the ability to stream and download video gave rise to the concept of viral videos. Many of these videos were emailed from person to person, compressed and of low quality, and became popular thanks to friends, family, and coworkers. The stars of these original viral videos received little or no compensation beyond seeing their work turn up time and again.

The birth of YouTube has allowed people to find viral videos anytime and from anywhere. It has also allowed people to upload videos of their own in the attempt to find viewers. YouTube allows users to create channels of videos and make money from the number of views. This has created a new economy dedicated to YouTube celebrities, nearly identical to Hollywood.

Managers, public relations specialists, green room developers, sound and video analysts, and other professionals from the entertainment industry have moved to YouTube to help support the content creators. These content creators help YouTube viewers watch over 4 billion hours of videos each month.

Why are all of these professionals turning to YouTube? Advertising revenue.

Content creators are producing hit shows and channels. Each time a video they produce is watched by a YouTube user, a short ad plays beforehand or at specific break points during longer videos. These ads produce revenue for the content creator and for YouTube. Depending on the number of views, some channels can produce annual earnings in excess of $100,000. Jenna Marbles, for example, operates the 3rd largest YouTube channel. She earns nearly $350,000 per year from her YouTube videos alone.

As more people turn to the Internet for their entertainment, advertisers are focusing their dollars on reaching these potential young customers. This increase in online ad spending has helped YouTube content creators, like Jenna Marbles, to make money from their efforts. YouTube allows advertisers to market to key demographics for their products by advertising on videos most likely to be watched.

As the Internet continues to grow, change, and evolve, new opportunities will continue to present themselves. The opportunity to make money from creating your own viral video or program is just the latest in the new, digital economy, thanks to companies like YouTube.

Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2013)

Road warriors and jet travellers rejoice, we've found a laptop that will last all day and well into the night. The newest Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid-2013) lasted an astonishing 15-and-a-half hours on a battery test that makes most current mainstream ultrabooks and ultraportables cough and die after four to six hours. The fact that the system gives up very little if any day-to-day performance is astounding. This isn't a low-powered slate tablet that gives up computing performance in exchange for battery life. With the latest MacBook Air 13-inch, you have a fully functional ultraportable laptop with extremely long battery life, as it should be. If you need to do real work on a plane, train, or out in the field, get a MacBook Air 13-inch. It's our new Editors' Choice winner for mainstream ultraportable laptops.

Design and Features
Almost physically identical to the previous Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2012), the new MacBook Air 13-inch continues on in almost the same chassis as the previous model. The MacBook Air has an all-aluminum construction, tapering from 0.11 inches thick in the front to 0.68 inches in the back. It's essentially the same chassis Apple has been using for the past three years, which is in turn a slightly modified version of the chassis they've been using since 2008. While not necessarily the thinnest laptop on the market anymore, it is still as thin and portable as it ever has been. The side panels house a pair of USB 3.0 ports (one left, one right), a Thunderbolt port (which can be used as a mini-DisplayPort for external monitors), a headset jack, a SDXC card slot, dual microphones and the system's MagSafe 2 power connector. The twin microphones are new, and will help others hear you during FaceTime sessions. In the future, under OS X Mavericks, the dual mic setup will help the system pick out your voice when you're using Siri. MagSafe 2 is the same connector that was introduced with last year's MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with Retina Display. The new MacBook Air tips the scales at a svelte 2.91 pounds, which is in the same ballpark as competitors like the Dell XPS 13-MLK (2.96 pounds) and the Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 (2.63 pounds with extended battery).

The MacBook Air has a backlit keyboard that's comfortable to type on, and a glass-surface, multi-touch trackpad. The system doesn't have a touch screen or touch screen option, but that's no deal breaker on a Mac, since OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion isn't optimized for touch anyway. The display measures 13.3 inches and has a screen resolution of 1,440 by 900. This is lower than the 1,920 by 1,080 resolution you'll get on systems like the Acer S7-191-6640 and Dell XPS 13-MLK, but you'd be hard pressed to tell the difference while watching a video at this screen size. If you need a higher resolution on a Mac, consider the MacBook Pro 13-inch (Retina Display).

loading...

What's Inside
The interior of the MacBook Air has been updated, with a new fourth-generation Intel Core i5-4250U processor and new PCIe-based Flash Storage. The 128GB flash memory module is mated to the motherboard with a new, faster PCIe connector, which makes the system react a little faster than the SATA-based flash storage of last year's model. The flash storage is physically smaller than last year's, according to ifixit.com, which means that third party upgrades will again be scarce. The base system comes with a 128GB flash storage unit, with about 102GB free when you take it out of the box. There are 256GB and 512GB options available on Apple's website. If you want more system memory, you'll have to order the system with it pre-installed (8GB total for $100 more). The memory is built into the motherboard, with no upgrade slots for additional memory DIMMs. The system comes with a 54 WHr battery, which is an improvement over the 50WHr battery in last year's model. Like all MacBooks and many ultrabooks these days, the battery in the MacBook Air 13-inch is not user replaceable.

The MacBook Air comes with the standard mix of full-version software built into OS X Mountain Lion, including FaceTime, Photo Booth, iPhoto, iTunes, Safari, Mail, Calendar, and Apple's App Store. This is good, because it means that the system isn't burdened by extraneous trial software. Windows PC makers are learning from this example: both the Acer S7-191-6640 and the Vizio 14-Inch Thin + Light (CT14-A4) come with Microsoft Signature prep, which removes all of the trialware and bloatware that would've come pre-loaded on a typical Windows retail system.

The system boots in only about 10 seconds, and wakes from sleep even faster. This is no doubt due to the MacBook Air's speedy flash storage and the fact that the system hasn't yet had too many programs installed yet. Apple completely abandoned optical drives last year as an obsolete technology, you can install files you've downloaded from the Internet, copied over from a USB drive, or use the Apple App Store to install new programs. The new MacBook Air comes with 802.11ac Wi-Fi, which is backward-compatible with dual-band 802.11n Wi-Fi. You should use the system with Apple's newly updated AirPort Extreme or another 802.11ac router if you need transfer rates approaching 1 Gbps. Speaking of speedy transport, the MacBook Air comes with a 10Gbps dual channel Thunderbolt port, which as stated earlier can interface with a mini-DisplayPort. For Gigabit Ethernet, HDMI, and other interfaces like FireWire 800, you'll need to buy an optional dongle from Apple or another provider. You'll be able to use an Apple TV or adapter cables for a multi-monitor setup after you've upgraded to OS X Mavericks later this year, but having HDMI built in would make this system that much closer to perfect. The MacBook Air 13-inch comes with Apple's one-year standard warranty with 90 days of phone support.

Performance
The system's new 1.3GHz Intel Core i5-4250U processor with integrated Intel HD Graphics 5000 is nominally clocked 400Mhz slower than the 1.7GHz i5-3427U processor in the last MacBook Air, but both will turbo up to 2.6GHz if needed. The lower base clock speed no doubt helps the system stretch out battery life. The new MacBook Air 13-inch lasted a staggering 15 hours 33 minutes on our battery rundown test. That is more than double the six hours we get from the best ultrabooks using 3rd-generation Intel Core processors like the high-end ultrabook Editors' Choice Asus Zenbook Prime Touch UX31A-BH15T (6:38). Most systems return far less battery power, like the five hours for the Dell XPS 13-MLK (4:56) or four hours like on the Sony VAIO Fit 14 (SVF14A15CXB) (4:08).

The downside of the lower-clocked processor is that the MacBook Air is a bit slower on the multimedia benchmark tests (Handbrake and Photoshop CS6), where it lags the Windows systems with faster-clocked Core i5 processors. On the flipside, the MacBook Air is still two to four times faster than Intel Atom-powered Windows 8 slate tablets on the Handbrake test, and those Atom-powered tablets can't run the Photoshop CS6 test at all. The integrated Intel HD Graphics 5000 of the new MacBook Air shows a much-improved Heaven benchmark score over previous MacBook Airs and other systems with Intel HD Graphics 4000. Essentially, since there is an obvious upgrade path for users who want a faster multimedia workhorse (namely the MacBook Pros), the tradeoff for battery life is well worth it for the general business and consumer user.

With double the battery life of the strongest current Windows 8 competition, the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2013) adds epic untethered usability to a highly portable system. While systems like the Acer Aspire S7-191-6640 and Vizio CT14-A4 start to approach the MacBook Air's portability, none can approach that level of work utility away from a power outlet. The MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2013) is the system you want to be using if you need to deliver real work away from your desk. The fact that it can return such a long battery life while still using a mainstream processor is astonishing. Make no mistake, this simple score shows that laptops haven't conceded the battery life prizes to the mobile OS tablets yet. The MacBook Air 13 is close, but not quite perfect, since it lacks a built in HDMI-out port and the slower-clocked processor returns slower multimedia performance on benchmark tests than rivals. That said, due to its excellent battery life, portability, and its very good day-to-day performance, we have no qualms in giving the Apple MacBook Air 13-inch (Mid 2013) the Editors' Choice for ultraportable laptops.
