Suarez helps Liverpool get 1st win of season

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:21 p.m. ET Sept. 29, 2012

NORWICH, England (AP) -Luis Suarez scored a hat trick Saturday as Liverpool earned its first win of the Premier League season with a 5-2 drubbing at Norwich to ease some of the pressure on new manager Brendan Rodgers.

Suarez, who also netted a treble at Carrow Road in April, gave Liverpool a perfect start by scoring with a shot from the edge of the box after just 67 seconds, and added his second in the 38th. Midfielder Nuri Sahin made it 3-0 shortly after the break and Suarez then completed his hat trick in the 57th as Liverpool finally managed to convert its advantage in possession into goals.

Steve Morison pulled one back for the hosts four minutes later, but Steven Gerrard added the fifth for Liverpool in the 68th.

Grant Holt scored another consolation goal for Norwich in the 87th, but the hosts were booed off the pitch as they remained without a victory under Chris Hughton.

Liverpool had just two points from five games going into this weekend after its worst league start in more than 50 years but climbed out of the relegation zone with the victory. Rodgers opted to go with start a trio of teenagers as Andre Wisdom and Suso were given their first Premier League starts alongside Raheem Sterling - and all three impressed with their pace and fluent play.

But it was Suarez who provided the ruthless finishing, first driving home a shot from 18 yards after Glen Johnson's throughball was cleared into the path of the Uruguay striker.

He had a strong penalty claim denied when he was brought down in the area in the 23rd, but added his second when he stole the ball from Michael Turner and slotted home from 12 yards. He then set up Sahin for the third before curling a brilliant finish past the outstrethced John Ruddy to complete his hat trick.

Paul Ryan Stops at Ohio State University Sports Bar to Have a Beer

COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State may not be in town today, but it's still game day and Paul Ryan stopped by a sports bar here to greet fans and voters in this crucial battleground state, as well as have a Miller Lite and watch some of the game with his wife, Janna.

Dressed in a jacket with Ohio State colors of scarlet and gray, Ryan greeted a crowd of diehard Ohio State fans at the Varsity Club, a bar located just 500 yards away from the stadium. It was not only game day, but also parents' weekend and the bar was teeming with students and more than a few parents, all dressed in scarlet and gray T-shirts, sweatshirts, and jerseys.

It was mostly a receptive audience to the GOP vice presidential nominee and he took photos and shook hands, introducing himself as "Paul" to the packed bar who greeted him with, "Paul Ryan is here!"

Despite the jacket, he remained truthful to students he met, telling them over and over that he did go to Miami of Ohio in Oxford, and that while he is a Big Ten fan, he is loyal to his University of Wisconsin Badgers.

"I'm more of a Badger fan, but it's all Big Ten right?" Ryan said to a female student wearing an Ohio State T-shirt.

Although almost everyone was excited to see the House Budget Chairman - several telling him they were eager to vote for him - there was at least one table that was less than enthusiastic. When Ryan made his way to a group of four girls one told him, "Hey you're in the way!" referring to the large television screens surrounding the bar that were playing the Ohio State vs. Michigan State game.

Ryan quickly responded, "Have a good game, all right?"

Ryan then went outside to the patio where he bought a man a beer who identified himself as a Marine who was stationed in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, and did "partnering" with Afghan soldiers.

"I'll tell all my Marines I got to have a beer with you. Cheers," the Marine told Ryan before the two clinked beer bottles.

Several fans offered to buy the congressman a beer, but he declined each time, citing congressional ethics rules. He did show one student his "lucky Buckeye" given to him by Ohio senator and Barack Obama debate prep stand-in for Mitt Romney, Rob Portman.

At the end of the stop, Ryan left the bar and posed with three female students who were pre-positioned to take a photo with Ryan in the famous O-H-I-O sign. Ryan was the "H" grinning and putting his hands up. He yelled "O-H" and the students shouted back "I-O!" He added, "I love that."

The photo was likely a dig at the president who while visiting the campus of Ohio State last month posed for the same picture and while he was also the "H," the four letters were at first out of order, spelling "O-I-H-O," before it was quickly corrected.

It's not the candidate's first stop on the campaign trail to Ohio State. On Sept. 1 he went to see his Miami of Ohio Redhawks take on the Ohio State Buckeyes at their home opener. Ohio State hasn't lost a home opener in 34 years and this was no different. His alma matter got crushed by the Buckeyes 56-10.

Ryan is in Columbus to speak at a dinner and rally for the U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance, a group of hunters and fishermen.

Probing the mysteries of cracks and stresses

ScienceDaily (Sep. 28, 2012) ? Diving into a pool from a few feet up allows you to enter the water smoothly and painlessly, but jumping from a bridge can lead to a fatal impact. The water is the same in each case, so why is the effect of hitting its surface so different?

This seemingly basic question is at the heart of complex research by a team in MIT's Department of Nuclear Science and Engineering (NSE) that studied how materials react to stresses, including impacts. The findings could ultimately help explain phenomena as varied as the breakdown of concrete under sudden stress and the effects of corrosion on various metal surfaces.

Using a combination of computer modeling and experimental tests, the researchers studied one specific type of stress -- in a defect called a screw dislocation -- in one kind of material, an iron crystal lattice. But the underlying explanation, the researchers say, may have broad implications for many kinds of stresses in many different materials.

The research, carried out by doctoral student Yue Fan, associate professor Bilge Yildiz, and professor emeritus Sidney Yip, is being published this week in the journal Physical Review Letters.

Essentially, the team analyzed how the strength of a material can increase quite abruptly as the rate of strain applied to the material increases. This transition in the rate at which a material cracks or bends, called a flow-stress upturn, has been observed experimentally for many years, but its underlying mechanism has never been fully explained, the researchers say.

"The formulation is not specific to this particular defect," Yildiz explains. Rather, she and her colleagues have figured out what they believe is a set of general principles. "We have proven that it works in this system," she says.

"There are implications that go beyond dislocations, beyond even crystals," Yip adds. But before extending the work -- something the team is working on now -- the researchers had to prove the principle by applying it to a specific case, in this case the screw dislocation in iron. While other researchers have analyzed behaviors associated with particular kinds of defects in specific materials, with these new general principles, "all of a sudden we have an explanation for their data that does not require such specific assumptions," Yip says.

Flow-stress upturn "is an important phenomenon in materials," Fan says, explaining how they bend and crack in a process called plastic deformation. "It's common in all metals," he says, as well as in many other materials.

But the way that deformation varies, depending on the forces being applied, Fan says, is similar to the way the surface of water in a pool can part gently when a diver hits the surface at a certain rate of speed, but doesn't have time to part and behaves like a solid when the impact is too rapid, as in a jump from a great height.

The key is something called "strain localization," Yip says -- that is, the way an impact or other stress is confined to a small initial location, and how rapidly the applied forces can then spread beyond that point. To understand that fully, he says, the team had to analyze how the atoms and molecules move to produce this behavior.

The team found that, in addition to the rate at which the strain is applied, the effect depends critically -- and in a highly predictable way -- on the temperature of the material. "People think they're independent," Fan says, but it turns out the effects of strain rate and temperature are strongly related.

The effects are quite dramatic, Yildiz says: The rate of change taking place within the material can suddenly change by orders of magnitude, transforming a slow erosion into a sudden catastrophic fracture. The analysis could potentially help predict the breakdown of structures as varied as concrete buildings, metal pressure vessels in powerplants, and the structural components of airplane bodies, but further work will be needed to show how these basic principles can be applied to these different materials.

"I don't want to say it's going to be the exact same phenomenon" in such different cases, Yildiz says, but the underlying principles of coupled environmental factors "could explain significant differences" in the way these materials behave under stress.

"We believe this behavior is universal" among different materials, Yip says, "but we haven't proven that yet. It's the beginning of a long journey."

Ting Zhu, a professor of physics at Georgia Institute of Technology, says the MIT team's work provides "a new perspective for a longstanding puzzle on the so-called upturn behavior of flow stress. The work represents a new paradigm that synergistically integrates the theoretical modeling with atomistic calculations, thereby enabling a parameter-free explanation of the puzzle." Zhu, who was not connected with this research, adds that, "Their approach should be generally applicable to a wide range of the flow-stress problems for both crystalline and glassy solids."

The work was supported by the U.S. Department of Energy's Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors and its Division of Materials Sciences and Engineering.

Australians suddenly richer after statistician 'finds' $338 billion ...

By Reuters

SYDNEY - Australians are suddenly a whole lot better off after the government statistician "found" A$325 billion ($338 billion) in share assets previously unrecognized.

The Australian Bureau of Statistics on Thursday released its latest report on household assets which included massive upward revisions to estimates for equity holdings. Total financial assets were now put at A$3.1 trillion at the end of March, compared to the originally reported A$2.77 trillion.

The revision is worth roughly A$14,380 for every one of the country's 22.6 million people.

The world's 10 most expensive cities

"This issue incorporates new estimates for households holding of unlisted shares and other equity in other private non financial corporations," the statistician drily noted.

The value of such equity is now put at A$383 billion at the end of March, compared to the original A$91 billion.

"The Bureau of Statistics has effectively 'found' A$325 billion in household wealth," said Craig James, chief economist at CommSec.

The poorest countries in the world

Total financial assets also rose further in the second quarter to stand at A$3.11 trillion by the end of June, up A$76 billion on the same period last year.

The upward revisions to wealth also mean households do not look quite as stretched when compared to their debts.

The ABS now estimates the ratio of debt to liquid assets was 129.1 percent in March, well down on the original estimate of 170.1 percent.

There have been long-standing concerns that the high debt levels of Australian households left them vulnerable to an economic shock such as a sharp rise in the, currently low, 5.1 percent unemployment rate.

Second-generation Razer Blade hands-on [update: now with video]

Razer Blade 20 handson

Razer's second attempt at a gaming laptop is just as sleek as its first try, and even more powerful. The second-generation Razer Blade -- Razer Blade 2.0, we're calling it -- packs some serious hardware: an unannounced Core i7 processor, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660M graphics (a big step up from last year's GT 555M inclusion), 8GB of 1600MHz DDR3 RAM, a 500GB 7200RPM hard drive, and 64GB of solid state storage. All that hardware is stuffed in a nigh identical aluminum chassis to the first edition, with a 17.3-inch high def screen and the infamous multitouch LCD Switchblade interface (read: that bizarre little touch screen built into the keyboard). And all this for the low, low price of ... nearly $2,500. Yikes.

For the savvy, independently wealthy gamer on the go, however, little else on the market compares to Razer's Blade laptop. The second generation focuses on beefing up the tech specs from last year, and that's immediately apparent with the inclusion of the Kepler-grade GTX 660M. Not much else is changed in the hardware department otherwise, with the exception of the USB slots all being upgraded to 3.0 -- the same LCD touch panel display sits on the right side of the keyboard, and its been bolstered with a new software suite.

Fister fans 9 in a row, Tigers increase lead

DETROIT (AP) ? Doug Fister was breezing along after striking out nine straight batters and setting an American League record.

Detroit led by four runs in the eighth inning ? but for the 2012 Tigers, nothing has come easy.

The Tigers nearly wasted Fister's dazzling streak, blowing a big lead late before beating Kansas City 5-4 on Thursday when Alex Avila drove home the winning run in the ninth with a bases-loaded grounder.

Detroit's lead in the AL Central grew to two games when the slumping Chicago White Sox lost to Tampa Bay 3-2.

"Getting a win is big," Avila said. "We have to be able to win tight games like this. It's the only way we're going to be able to get in the playoffs and go far in the playoffs."

Detroit finished 50-31 at home this season ? and will now try to wrap up the division on the road. The Tigers play three games at Minnesota, followed by a season-ending three-game series at Kansas City.

Fister came within one strikeout of matching Tom Seaver's major league record of 10 in a row. He struck out Salvador Perez to end the top of the fourth, starting a streak that didn't end until Perez grounded out to the shortstop on a two-strike pitch in the seventh.

"It's crazy, to go through a whole lineup and strike everybody out," Royals outfielder Jeff Francoeur said. "And I don't think he threw more than four pitches to any of the batters."

The AL record of eight consecutive strikeouts had been accomplished several times, most recently by Kansas City's Blake Stein on June 17, 2001.

After Perez grounded out for the third out of the seventh, first baseman Prince Fielder put his arm around Fister as they headed back to the dugout.

"I said, 'Congratulations, man. You made history.' He was like, 'What are you doing?'" Fielder said. "He was locked in so it was kind of like, 'Get away from me.' I was like, 'All right, they'll tell you."

At that point, Fister had retired 16 straight hitters and Detroit led 4-0 ? but he was oblivious to the strikeout record.

"Honestly, I had no idea," Fister said. "(Fielder) was yelling at me to step off during the inning, and I kind of looked at him. Normally, he'll do that, to slow me down, if I'm getting too quick. ... I thought that was kind of what he was doing there. He just said, 'Hey, step off.' I look at him, and he kept looking at me, and he said, 'Aw, I'll tell you later.'"

Fister's performance almost went for naught. The Royals scored three runs in the eighth, and Billy Butler tied it in the ninth with a solo homer off Joaquin Benoit (5-3).

Fielder led off the Detroit ninth with a chopper that went past the mound and charging shortstop Tony Abreu. The hefty slugger made it all the way to second for a double on a ball that only ended up a few feet beyond the infield.

Delmon Young was intentionally walked, and pinch-hitter Ramon Santiago bunted into a forceout at third, leaving runners at first and second. Kelvin Herrera replaced Tim Collins (5-4) on the mound and got Jhonny Peralta to hit what looked like a potential double play grounder to third, but Mike Moustakas misplayed it for his third error of the game ? and Kansas City's fifth.

Avila hit a full-count pitch to first baseman Brayan Pena, who made a diving stop and touched the bag, but had no play at home.

"Pena still made a great play on that one," Fielder said. "Baseball is really hard because even if you're good, you have to be a little lucky, too."

Fister finished with 10 strikeouts in 7 2-3 innings. He allowed two earned runs and five hits.

Kansas City's Luis Mendoza allowed two earned runs in seven innings.

Francoeur hit an RBI double in the eighth, Johnny Giavotella added an RBI groundout, and Abreu, pinch-hitting, drove in a run with a single to make it 4-3.

Detroit took a 4-0 lead thanks in part to four Kansas City errors in the first two innings.

Moustakas was charged with two errors on one grounder by Quintin Berry ? one for mishandling it and another for a bad throw. Fielder drove in a run later in the first with a single, advancing to second on an error by left fielder Alex Gordon.

Young hit a sacrifice fly, and Gordon threw Fielder out at home on a single by Andy Dirks to end the inning.

Berry's two-run triple in the second made it 4-0.

NOTES: Detroit closer Jose Valverde was sick and unavailable. ... Royals 1B Eric Hosmer left the game with a strained right shoulder. ... The Tigers play at Minnesota on Friday night. LHP Drew Smyly (4-3) will start because of an injury to Max Scherzer. Minnesota will counter with LHP Scott Diamond (12-8).

SHAPE Shares: Celebrate National Women' s Health and Fitness Day!

Today marks the 11th annual National Women's Health and Fitness Day. While we'd like to think that every day in the SHAPE office is about health and fitness, we couldn't ignore this important national holiday. We know you're busy, but whether you're a working mom, a college student, or a working professional (or a combination of all three), we encourage you to make time for your health. Although women tend to take care of those around them, they often end up neglecting their own health. And that can lead to some scary stuff?for example, though heart attacks, stroke, and cardiovascular disease strike both men and women, women are more likely to die from them.

The good news is that the road to health doesn't have to begin with a monumental change. Here are some of our favorite small changes you can make today for a better life:

1. The 15-minute total-body kettlebell circuit. Short on time? No problem! Ten or 15 minutes is still plenty of time to get in a total-body workout. For example, the average kettlebell routine melts away 20 calories per minute. Try this killer kettlebell program at home to blast 300 calories in just 15 minutes. If you're not one for getting sweaty (we feel ya), try one of these no-sweat workouts. They'll get results without leaving you completely drenched!

2. Make a simple swap. It can be hard to stick to a healthy diet, especially if you're operating within a tight budget. But even a change as simple as drinking more water, having a handful of almonds, or sitting down specifically when you drink alcohol at a party can all pay off in big ways. If weight loss is your goal, check out these 15 small expert-approved diet tips.

3. Skip the energy drinks. Lots of late nights? Feeling like you're running yourself ragged? We've all been there! Pass over the candy bar or even the coffee when you need an instant boost and try these expert tips to revitalize yourself instantly instead.

4. Put yourself on snooze control. Make it a priority to get more zzzz! Most adults don't nearly enough sleep, and that's bad: A lack of sleep has been linked to everything from an increased risk of diabetes to weight gain to decreased performance at work or school. Conversely, getting at least seven hours of sleep a night can lead to better memory, more energy, an improved immune system, and curbed cravings. Burning the midnight oil? Nosh on one of these healthy snacks before bedtime or try these tips for powering down so that you can relax at night.

5. Give yourself a break. What's your personal goal? Do you want to lose five pounds? Run a mile? Run a marathon? Whatever it is, you're bound to have discouraging days. Just remember that whatever you're doing, you're doing something good for yourself.

Tell us! What are you doing to celebrate National Women's Health and Fitness Day? Let us know in the comments below!

Homecoming bullying prank turns to civic support of victim Whitney Kropp (+video)

A homecoming prank and its outcome breaks hearts and then warms them: Bullying victim Whitney Kropp was nominated for homecoming court as a joke, but her small town rallies around her.

By Lauren Parker-Gill,?Contributing Blogger / September 27, 2012

Bullying victim Whitney Krapp thanks her community of supporters, posted on September 16, 2012.

It has always been said ? kids are cruel. As time goes by, bullying continues to reach new heights, as Whitney Kropp can unfortunately attest. She was the target of the cruelest of pranks, when her high school nominated her as the sophomore representative for their Homecoming Court.

At first, she was shocked and excited by the homecoming vote, until she learned the cruel reality ? the students in her school thought it would be funny if an unpopular student won. They wasted no time and began pointing and laughing at her in the hallways and posting about it on her Facebook page.

And the popular football player who was voted to escort her? He withdrew his name because he didn?t want to be linked with her.

?I thought I wasn?t worthy,? said Kropp, 16. ?I was this big old joke.? Whitney was devastated and wanted to withdraw, herself. However, at the urging of her grandmother, mother and sister, she planned to attend the game, to hold her head high and not give the bullies that satisfaction.

As word of this quickly spread through her small town, her community rallied around her. Showering her with support, local businesses offered her everything; a new dress, new shoes and a tiara, as well as having her hair and nails done. The town also plans to pack the football stadium for the homecoming game this weekend, wearing Team Whitney shirts, so they can cheer for her when she is introduced at halftime.

Beyond her town, this story has spread online and a Facebook page called?Support Whitney Kropp?was created 11 days ago, so more people can show her their support. It already has over 46,000 likes.

This story both breaks and warms my heart.

What started out as a heartless and terrible prank on a 16 year-old-girl, has turned into such a positive story because of people willing to take a stand against bullying. I hate to even think about what Homecoming would have been like for Whitney, if her town didn?t rally behind her.

Would the students have further humiliated her by booing when her name was announced? Or would they have done something even worse? This story could have had a very different, very tragic outcome.

I am truly so moved by this town, for taking her by the hand and showing her that she is not a joke ? and she is worthy. Good for them.

As for the bullies who calculated this disgusting act? The school district is conducting an investigation. I?m hoping this isn?t the end of the story ? that there will be consequences for those involved.

If not, do you think the outpouring of support is enough to teach them a lesson?

A-Rod gets day off vs Twins with bruised left foot

Associated Press Sports

updated 11:44 a.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) - The New York Yankees have held third baseman Alex Rodriguez out of the lineup with a bruised left foot.

Rodriguez fouled a ball off his foot in Tuesday's game at Minnesota and was on the bench for Wednesday's series finale against the Twins. Manager Joe Girardi said he might've given Rodriguez a rest for this game regardless, or at least used him as the designated hitter. Girardi said the 14-time All-Star could be available to pinch hit depending on how he felt.

To break up the left-handers in his lineup, Girardi switched Derek Jeter to the second spot and made Ichiro Suzuki the leadoff man.

Rodriguez has one hit in his last 14 at-bats. He missed nearly six weeks earlier in the season because of a broken left hand.

Cable, IPTV providers reportedly testing cloudbased HD gaming for launch next year

The next generation of consoles from Sony and Microsoft haven't even been announced yet but their best competition may be from your cable TV / internet provider, according to a report from Bloomberg. The only-too-eager-to-talk people familiar with the matter named AT&T U-Verse, Verizon FiOS and Time Warner Cable as services preparing tests before the end of the year with general availability planned for 2013. Comcast and Cox were also name dropped as potential candidates to bring console-quality HD games directly to customers, based on tech from startups like Playcast, CiiNOW and Agawi. Of course, while we've seen this sort of setup before (as seen above, check out an awesomely 90s Sega Channel ad after the break) and recently from OnLive and Gaikai, cloud gaming has yet to catch on in a major way. Whether this potential approach is all smoke or will actually turn into reality has yet to be seen, but after TV Everywhere we wouldn't be surprised to see providers toss in gaming as another incentive for subscribers not to cut the cord.

A new hire's first six months - Business Management Daily

by Amy Hirsh Robinson

woman holding hired signIt doesn?t take long for people to decide if they?ll be short-term or long-term employees.

Especially during the first six months of employment, employees are highly alert to signals and experiences?however minor?that will help them navigate their new work environment.

In this impressionable state, they are more likely to jump to conclusions about their employer before having all the data.

For employers, making a favorable impression during these first six months is critical to employee retention, engagement and productivity.

The problem: Most employers focus on making good first impressions during the recruitment process. They neglect to think about what will happen once the employee accepts the job and arrives ready for work.

Employees who attended a structured orientation program are 69% more likely to remain with the company after three years than those who do not, according to research conducted by Corning Glass.

What?s more, organizations with structured onboarding programs enjoy a 60% year-over-year improvement in revenue per full-time employee and a 63% year-over-year improvement in customer satisfaction, according to a study by The Aberdeen Group.

If you are going to spend money and time acquiring top talent and paying them to work, why not prepare them to succeed and stay?

Cost of bad onboarding

All employers have new-hire onboarding (i.e., the process of integrating new hires into an organization), whether they manage it or not.

The costs of a poorly managed program are significant to a company?s bottom line, and include:

  • Increased turnover
  • Diminished productivity
  • Reduced employee engagement
  • Loss of respect for the management and company
  • Degradation of the company brand.

No one-size-fits-all approach

There is no single ?correct? approach to employee onboarding. Every situation is unique and an effective onboarding program will have direct alignment to a company?s long-term strategy and goals.

That being said, the following pit??falls to avoid apply to all conditions:? ??? ?

  1. Not having a clean and ready workstation on day one.
  2. Assuming a new hire cannot be productive in his or her job from day one.
  3. Cramming 20 hours of information into four dull hours of orientation.
  4. Neglecting the importance of cul?tural adaptation to the new hire?s success.
  5. Ignoring the onboarding needs of mid- and senior-level employees.
  6. Relying on organizational charts, rather than cultural norms and behavior, to explain lines of communication.
  7. Failing to address generational needs and differences in the onboarding process.
  8. Starting new hires when their supervisor is absent.
  9. Running a disorganized program.
  10. Adopting a ?sink or swim? approach because it worked for you!

The bottom line

Employees who feel challenged, empowered and acknowledged during the first year of employment will reward companies with loyalty and productivity.

Those who feel overlooked or marginalized will eventually leave for op??portunities that better meet their needs.

To what extent does your onboarding process fit the needs and expectations of your top talent?

Euro zone still big uncertainty, but situation improving

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Europe's debt crisis remains the biggest drag on the global economy, but the region is in a much better situation today than it was, U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said on Tuesday.

"For the first time they have in place a plausibly powerful set of financial tools to support a strategy," Geithner said.

The European Central Bank said earlier this month it stands at the ready to buy unlimited amounts of bonds issued by euro zone member states if they put in a formal request for aid and fulfilled strict domestic policy conditions.

Speaking at the Clinton Global Initiative conference in New York, Geithner noted the long, difficult road ahead for the euro zone region, saying it will be tested "every month, every week for the next several years."

"There is not going to be a week or a specific date in the future where you are going to know with total confidence how they are going to handle this," Geithner said.

On the U.S. domestic front, Geithner said a balanced mix of reforms is needed for dealing with the so-called "fiscal cliff" of spending cuts and tax rises of about $500 billion that are set to come into effect at the beginning of next year.

Geithner said that although the fiscal cliff is looked at with unease, it is a good opportunity for the United States to address tax and entitlements reform, and that the 2008-2009 financial crisis had been a much harder challenge that what Washington is facing today.

But political gridlock is still a hurdle for the economy.

"You still have a level of political paralysis and uncertainty about whether our political system can find a way to govern again, to govern in ways that would be good for the economy and make growth stronger," said Geithner.

Geithner said there was a lot of "promise" in the U.S. economic recovery, pointing to tentative strength in the housing market and consumers paying down their debt. But he called the drought in the U.S. Midwest "a pretty significant drag on growth."

College of Charleston Softball Set to Start Fall Season

CofC Softball

CofC Cougars Softball

MT. PLEASANT, S.C. ? The College of Charleston softball team will open its fall season this Friday, Sept. 30 with the first of four doubleheaders the team will host over the next three weeks. All games will be played at Patriots Point and admission will always be free to the public.

The fall slate opens on Friday, Sept. 30 when the Cougars host crosstown-rival Charleston Southern on Sunday, Sept. 30. The Cougars and Bucs met six times last spring and evenly split the series, 3-3.

CofC then hosts two doubleheaders the following weekend with Spartanburg Methodist on Saturday, Oct. 6 at noon and Anderson on Sunday, Oct. 7 at 1 p.m.

The final doubleheader of the fall is on Saturday, Oct. 13 against Coastal Carolina at noon.

?With each scrimmage we are improving as a whole,? said senior outfielder Kristy Giragosian. ?Some of the freshmen have really stepped up and given us returners a run for our money. This is definitely breeding healthy competition and will only better us in the long run. The scrimmages are a great way for us to get to know each other?s strengths and weaknesses while building team chemistry.?

Last season, the Cougars made a historic run to their second consecutive Southern Conference championship game by stringing together four must-have wins while facing elimination in the SoCon Tournament. The Cougars return all but one starter to this team and look forward to another exciting run in the spring of 2013.

NCAA Football Rankings, Week 5: Arizona Slips Out Of Coaches' Poll Top 25

Unable to get on the scoreboard against the Oregon Ducks, the Arizona Wildcats see their stock slip in the latest USA Today Coaches' Poll, as they slip from No. 21 to unranked in the latest top-25 edition of the poll.

Recieving just 16 points from the pollsters, the Wildcats fall all the way to No. 36 after their 49-0 shutout loss to the Ducks. Oregon, for its part, moves up from No. 3 to No. 2 after the victory over Arizona, leapfrogging the now No. 3 LSU Tigers.

Arizona State fares a bit better in this week's Coaches' Poll, landing at No. 34 with 22 points.

The Wildcats will have an opportunity gain back some of the ground they lost this weekend as they take on the newly ranked No. 21 Oregon State Beavers next weekend.

Alabama remained atop the poll, collecting all but two of the poll's first-place votes.

Check out the full poll here.
